My retired mother volunteers at a library and today she was excited to share that someone returned two books: Mine and another about Justice Sotomayor. These are the things that make my little nerd heart smile.

Pray for ya girl.🫠 I might have to break my "no going to the office on Saturday" rule for the first time, but this book is worth it. I'm excited to share it soon.

Finished this yesterday and WOW!!! These characters are so well developed, and the plot structure works so well. From beginning to end, this book was satisfying, complex, and tender. It's definitely in my top 3 books for the year.

Hummingbirds always bring me such joy. I captured this little guy this week by one of my flowered plants.

I was able to complete one more book before my time is consumed with teaching prep, grading, and writing. This book detailed heavy and painful experiences, yet, the women's wit and candor made me laugh loud. The author centered Southern Black women and their lives.

Happy Jamaican Independence!

On August 6, 1962, Jamaica officially became independent from British rule. My parents still recount how they and other children dressed in all white and paraded through their town to mark the occasion.

We likkle but we tallawah! (We're small but mighty) 🇯🇲

Today, on what would have been Emmett Till's 84th birthday, I'm sharing one of my favorite poems by Eve Ewing.

Ever finish a book and wish you could time traveling a week in the past, so that you could begin reading it again? As a Jamaican woman who has watched my mother and grandmother prepare black cake, this story, like the dessert is rich, textured and complex. Outstanding!

Charmaine Wilkerson developed these characters with care. There is pain, yes, but we see Black prosperity and self-determination. I left the novel feeling full.

Happy Juneteenth!

Finishing Sula this week reminded why writing about Black women's lives in the dry, academic way that aligns with my sociological training just isn't going to work in the next phase of my career. I may not be able to compose a symphony of words like Morrison, but my words need more rhythm & music.

Yesterday, students, faculty administrators, and family at Virginia State University celebrated commencement with jubilance. Black joy is beautiful!

If this image doesn't stir up anxiety, heartache and anger, please do not criticize New Yorkers for celebrating a semi-conference playoff win like it's a NBA championship.

20 years ago Goapele Mohlabane was the first Black woman to have her music video uploaded to YouTube. The video and the song are beautiful and ethereal, capturing the essence of early 2000s neosoul.

If this image reminds you of a distinct smell, then your church probably didn't call it Easter Sunday. It was Resurrection Sunday. IYKYK. 😆 #blacksky

I know the expression "my ancestors' wildest dreams" seems cliche, but it's difficult to journey with Annis and Aza (main characters) and not feel awe, heartache and speechlessness at the lives that came before us. @jesmimi.bsky.social has captured this journey with haunting beauty.

Anyway...

Images of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King in 1967 on vacation in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. This is where he wrote the first draft of "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community".

Breonna Taylor departed this earthly plane five ago on March 13, 2020. She was a daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece and friend. The violence and injustice of her death must never overshadow the beauty of her life.
