Certain aspects of modern Conservative/Reform/Republican/etc politics make me think of these panels from Asterix In Switzerland...

Some purchases from the Quilt Show today: some Japanese cotton in a rather Escher-like pattern of blue fish, some lovely butterfly fabrics (Robert Kaufman), and a mixed selection of Ankara fabric fat quarters together with a six-yard piece.

It’s always nice when you can ask for (and get) birthday presents related to research on the current project. (Yes, I did do Latin to A level, but that was thirty-something years ago…)

Photo of me with the quilted Wings of Pride by Matt Wilding. I was far from the only person getting a photo taken with them, too. #wingsofpride

And to finish up - a painting reminding us of the mortal nature of all earthly things. Vanity, by Simon Reynard de Saint-Andre. He would no doubt have included a latte like the one I’m currently drinking if it had been available.

Still Life with Red Parrot, by Reynard Levieux, 1613-99. (And very flashy pomegranate.)

The Gallery of Cardinal Silvio Valenti Gonzagne, by Gian Paolo Pannini, 1691-1761. (Probably better than golden toilets, but I’m not sure I’d call it moderation or humility. Or maybe I’m just jealous…)

Rather sad: this painting, The Servant of Cleopatra, by Theodore Chasseriau, is from a larger painting of his in 1845, Cleopatra Giving Herself to Death. The painting was turned down by the Salon, and Chasseriau destroyed it. This is all that’s left.

A painting of a balloon accident (or a landscape with balloon accident) by Jean-Antoine Constantin, 1784. The balloon is visible on the far middle left, on fire. (The aeronaut managed to jump to safety.)
