In 2006, the cross-passageway on Washington closed to make way for a never-completed megaproject, and with State-Washington's reason for existing gone, the station was closed. You can still walk through the abandoned station if you walk between Jackson and Lake stations on the Red Line.

Washington and Lake were less than a trainlength apart so Washington Station on the State (Red) Line only really stayed open so passengers could use the cross-passageway to Washington Station on the Dearborn (Blue) Line.

Washington and Jackson stations on both lines were built with cross-passageways for passengers to transfer between the two lines (now Red and Blue lines). On the State Street (Red Line) tunnel, Lake Street Station was added slightly to the north of Washington Street.

This was a years-long dream of mine. These are CTA's State Street and Dearborn Street Subways. Washington, Monroe, and Jackson stations on both lines are actually one continuous platform. You can walk through the entire length of the tunnel, even through the sections where there are no stations.
