Yes, you're right. I didn't follow this one closely. But it looks like there were no established links to Ohtani. I do recall finding it hard to believe the Ohtani wasn't aware of it given the amount of his own money that was being used here. That's still shocking.

The idea that up-for-grabs voters are waiting for important signals out of a bizarre intra-party score settling over Joe Biden’s age is just such unreal bubble thinking that it beggars belief. Democrats may have gotten ahead of the public on the language they used about trans issues or DEI. But the idea that voters are waiting for signals about that rather than wanting to see people stand up for the country against the current onslaught is again just some bizarre insider/consultant circle jerk. For those of us who are never privy to the insider-think, we should be looking for Democrats who are willing to drive attention and find creative ways to cast even more light on things the White House is doing that are wildly, wildly unpopular.

The rich donor >> think tanks, magazines etc. pipeline is well established, but as John Ganz recalled in his recent blog post, the added layer of social media and the foot soldier mob that's been trained to appropriate this style is the additional layer that 100x's the cultural pollution effects
An outline of the institutional shape of this politics is coming in to view as well: there’s rich donor oligarchy on top, in the middle there’s the think tanks, magazines, and podcasts that serve as kind of currency exchanges where the coin of mob grievance is turned into respectable notes, and the concerns of elite politics are translated into terms the mob can understand and use, and then there’s the public platforms where little armies of trolls are mustered for whatever task is required by their political masters. In short, it’s a model of the kind of corporate society they wish to secure and reproduce on a larger scale: big bosses, middle-management, workers, all happily coordinated and cooperating. No unions, no pesky social movements, no restive professional managerial-classes with their moral pretensions, no federal bureaucracy meddling and gumming up the works with regulations. The “cancellers” will themselves be cancelled: subjected to harassment and intimidation by the mob if they get out of line. There will be no epistemic hierarchy: just “freedom,” an informational anarchy that translates into the impossibility of the exchange of real content and any rational deliberation. Just memes, nonsense, idiotic enthusiasms and fads, etc.
