Now see I know a whole lot of the boys who I grew up with whose only response to this would be "good," a strong indication that they have no idea, at all, how much good will US citizens enjoy in South Korea. But if Seoul's take is true, behind the scenes, Trump blinked.

I'm thinking that as much as I would like to never have occasion to use this, it's likely to come in handy often.

It's way less often these days, but sometimes South Korean politics still have the capacity to make U.S. politics look sane by comparison.

Of course, all that goes away as soon as the prefix "ex" and the adjective "jailed" register...

Maybe they were done with autopen, tho. Not that DJT lying should be news for *anyone* at this point.

Also, you know what? This. Very much this.

This is a heavily cropped photo. But for the attached article, in combination with recent suggestions that a *lack* of a social media presence may be symptomized as a tedency towards secretiveness...I have questions.

What the hell kind of dumbass timeline have I gone and been born in?

Quick follow up: is there even a remote chance that it gets better before I die?

There are certain writers that become lifelong entanglements. I know, for instance, that Graham Greene is my go-to palate cleanser. And I suspect there is a universe where I toed the line, took on grad school, and installed myself in some small university as the resident expert on Faulkner.

Also...marginalia is always a bonus!

100% expect the next one in the pile to be a "book club book," but since I help run a book club...and anyway, if I'm right, at least it'll be a quick read!

Schedule has definitely tightened, slowing reading pace, but my one volume of Balzac only lasted me a week. I often "joke" that the only shopping I can stand is book shopping, but really, it's the truth. If I encountered the whole "Human Comedy" in one place, for an affordable price, I'd buy it.

Stendhal complete...I understand why it's a favorite for some, and it was a good book for immersing myself in for a couple weeks, but I may turn elsewhere. Next up -- my TBR pile is heavy with French lit, with a couple monsters on the horizon. This one, though, is a re-read.

May 5th is Buddha's Birthday this year...always visit this fella to see how he's doing...

Longest walk of 2025, to date. Amongst humans.

...this is evident once the student "cleans up" the initial draft...

So I teach, pretty much exclusively EFL, and the vast majority of my students are elementary students.

I wanted to share something that happened yesterday that pretty much explains why teaching remains a source of hope for me, in a world where there is precious littlehope to be had.

First:

When I was younger much was made of "British understatement," which maybe seemed weird to me because of how southerners were likely to tell a friend they hadn't seen for months that "It's been a minute."

However, I am surprised to see CNN join the party.

Thankful to my daughter for alerting me to the existence of Mrs. Caliban, which proved both less difficult and more my general style. A welcome breather before taking on this brick, by Stendhal, a writer I know very little about.

2 weeks, give or take, is much slower than my usual reading pace, but The Rebel demanded it. Wasn't the most fun read, but I *am* glad I took it on.

Next up is something from a very different quarter, at the recommendation of my daughter. I expect it to go a bit faster.

This one was a slog through the first half, though a lot of that was due to my ignorance regarding the many historical points I knew little enough about, and Camus assumed his reader would know.

I get why this is few people's favorite Camus, but he always surprises me.

A couple of recent photos in the thrall of cherry blossoms here in South Korea (and a cheeky selfie...)

Also as I'm not in the US and the prospects of me ever getting to do anything with this are less than a fingernail's thickness from zero...but...why hasn't anyone hopped on this historical parallel as vehicle yet?

You were saying?
March 24, 2025 at 11:19 PM
I checked in at the American Corner at one of the libraries where I live (in South Korea) partially in an effort to shore up my local network, but also in response to someone on Bluesky saying the Seoul VOA office was closed.

It's genuinely just as well that I teach EFL because the language barrier tends to prevent moments like this:
