I've always reached for the ellipsis instead of the em dash. Neither is particularly grammatically sound, but when you see my ... you know I'm saying meanwhile, hold on now, or stay with me. A random thought as I consider my evolution as a writer, and becoming comfortable with the unconventional.

Labor’s share of U.S. output just fell to the lowest level in the BLS record (back to 1947): 53.8%. Historically, labor’s share was closer to 60–65% for much of the postwar period.
So while you may hear an over half goes to workers talking point...
