Merriam-Webster’s 2025 word of the year is “slop.” The word was first used in the 1700s to mean soft mud. It evolved more generally to mean something of little value.

Five years ago today, I lost my father to cancer/covid. I say both because he would have undoubtedly succumbed to the cancer in his brain stem not long after. But the long shot chemotherapy to extend his life by a few months left him open to infection in the hospital at the height of the pandemic.
