The notion that your 20s are the best years of your life is more rumor than reality. It shows up in songs, films, ads, social-media posts—but it says more about Americans’ idealization of youth than it does about what it actually feels like to be young today. The 2024 World Happiness Report found that when American adults were asked to rate the extent to which they were living their “best possible life,” those over 60 answered the most positively, followed by 45-to-59-year-olds. People younger than 30 trailed behind. Still, the idea that young adults ought to be at peak happiness is tough to shake, a cliché passed down by older people who know better. A 2021 YouGov poll found that the group most likely to think that their 20s would be their best years are 18- and 19-year-olds who haven’t yet experienced them.

“It takes a village” is advice that sounds communitarian, but in fact, it pushes for an individualistic solution to a societal problem. And it can distract people from demanding the kinds of solutions that could truly help families: longer parental leave; more flexible remote-work policies; child-care support; a work culture that accepts the constancy of kids’ sicknesses. Instead, families are left to “ask for help” on their own: You find the village. You join the app. You move closer to your mom. You need to be friendlier, more active, more approachable, more involved. Those who can cobble together a network—by virtue of luck or wealth or people skills—come out ahead. Everyone else, the “village” wisdom implies, isn’t asking hard enough

Accessing acute care hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area after a major Hayward earthquake.
Earthquakes can severely disrupt healthcare access, especially in dense cities. Here, we provide a comprehensive assessment of how a magnitude 7.25 earthquake on the Hayward Fault would impact access to acute care hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area. By integrating seismic hazard with hospital and transportation infrastructure’s vulnerability and connectivity data, we analyze 76 hospitals (426 buildings with 16,639 beds) and 5163 bridges within a vast network of ~1.5 million edges and ~0.5 million nodes. We leverage the rich data to formulate a coupled risk-network model to quantify simultaneous failures and cascading disruptions across the healthcare and transportation systems. Our results revealed that hospital bed capacity could drop to 51%, with Alameda County retaining only 20%. Widespread transportation failures further restrict access, increasing regional travel times by 177% and exceeding 1000% in parts of East Bay, potentially fully isolating a hospital and an entire urban community. These findings underscore the urgent need for resilient healthcare and transportation infrastructure to mitigate life-threatening disruptions following major earthquakes.

The FBI is now urging partner agencies to “adequately identify themselves” amid a string of cases in which those impersonating US ICE officers committed crimes, such as kidnapping and assault.
These criminal impersonations make it difficult for the community to distinguish between legitimate officers conducting lawful law enforcement action and imposters engaging in criminal activity, which damages trust between the local community and law enforcement officers.” The Oct. 17 bulletin, obtained by the group Property of the People through a public records request, comes as ICE has conducted widespread raids, often with partner agencies, and in some cases masked officers have refused to identify themselves or their agency. The bulletin lists five instances in which someone impersonated an ICE officer, in some cases to commit violent crimes. In August in New York, three men robbed a restaurant and tied up its staff, with the victims initially surrendering to the robbers because they identified themselves as ICE officers. In April in Florida, a man kidnapped a woman who agreed to leave with someone posing as an ICE officer, only to be taken to an apartment complex where she escaped. In Brooklyn in February, a man posing as an ICE officer directed a woman to a stairwell where he punched her and then tried to rape her, ultimately fleeing the scene with her purse and cell phone.

One particularly ironic consequence of Trump and Petro’s quarrel is already being felt. Since the 2000s, Colombia has relied on the United States for military assistance in fighting its drug cartels. With that help, Petro’s government has destroyed thousands of coca-paste labs and extradited hundreds of Colombian nationals wanted by the United States. But now that the United States has decertified Colombia as a “drug control partner,” it will no longer supply intelligence to Colombia’s authorities—a move that will almost certainly increase the flow of drugs to the United States more than the boat strikes will reduce it.

Many businesses are outsourcing text messaging of their customers w/passwords & logins using a marketplace of unvetted companies, all offering to get messages worldwide quicker & cheaper than their competitors. >1000 companies are using these 3rd parties.
Lighthouse obtained a cache of almost 100 million data packets from a phone industry source. The data gave a unique insight into telecom traffic passing through the network of a controversial Swiss outfit. Millions of these packets contained “A2P” (application-to-person) SMS messages. We analysed these to identify senders, recipients and type of message content. We found millions of sensitive security codes and logins getting sent via Fink Telecom Services. The logins related to services from some of the world’s largest tech companies – including Google, Meta and Amazon; banks and crypto exchanges; dating sites and online marketplaces; and messaging apps including WhatsApp, Viber and Signal. Overall we identified over 1000 companies sending logins to their customers via the network run by maverick telecom entrepreneur Andreas Fink. The text messages we were looking at often told us the account names as well as the login codes and phone numbers.

Stephen Miller spent his weekend, as he is wont to do, describing American politics as if the nation were in the advanced stages of civil war and as if he were dictating a message while racing to a mountain hideout to escape bloodthirsty guerrillas. “There is a large and growing movement of leftwing terrorism in this country. It is well organized and funded,” he wrote on X. “And it is shielded by far-left Democrat judges, prosecutors and attorneys general. The only remedy is to use legitimate state power to dismantle terrorism and terror networks.” The provocation for this latest sweaty missive was an unfavorable judicial ruling (by a judge contravening President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of 200 National Guardsmen in Oregon). But violent defiance has become the animating vision through which Miller—and, therefore, on account of his sweeping influence over domestic politics, the Trump administration—views his conflict with Democrats, the media, the judiciary, or any entity that stands in his path. The most consistent theme in Trump’s career is that any word or deed that he deems contrary to his political interests is illegitimate. Any unfavorable news story is libel, any election he loses is rigged, any unflattering fact pattern is a hoax, and almost anybody who opposes him should be locked up.

Donald Trump said on Saturday he is deploying troops to Portland, Oregon, “authorizing Full Force, if necessary”, ignoring pleas from local officials and the state’s congressional delegation, who suggested that the president was misinformed or lying about the nature and scale of a single, small protest outside one federal immigration enforcement office. Trump made the announcement on social media, using references to antifascists and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice). He claimed that the deployment was necessary “to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists”. Oregon’s governor, Tina Kotek, rejected the president’s characterization. “There is no national security threat in Portland. Our communities are safe and calm,” she wrote on social media. “My office is reaching out to the White House and Homeland Security for more information. We have been provided no information on the reason or purpose of any military mission.” A visit by the Guardian to downtown Portland on Saturday morning confirmed that the city is placid, the farmers’ market was packed and the protest against immigration enforcement in an outlying residential neighborhood remained small. There were just four protesters on the sidewalk near the Ice field office Trump claimed was “under siege”. One, wearing a chicken costume and draped in an American flag, held up a sign that read: “Portland Will Outlive Him.” Passing motorists honked in appreciation.

Since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Trump and his top aides have spoken of their plans to bring cases against people who give money to anti-Trump causes. “My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity and to other political violence, including the organizations that fund it and support it, as well as those who go after our judges, law enforcement officials, and everyone else who brings order to our country,” Trump said on September 10. In real life, there is no known evidence that any organization funded Kirk’s assassin. But there are donors to left-wing causes that Trump wants to defund. In the White House today, the president signed an order to investigate those donors. He cited the liberal donors Reid Hoffman and George Soros as potential targets. In April, Trump ordered an investigation of ActBlue, the Democratic fundraising platform.

Authoritarianism in the 21st century looks different, because it is different. In countries such as Hungary, Turkey, Venezuela, & India, democracies aren’t overthrown, nor do they collapse all at once. Instead, they erode.
We have in our heads specific images of authoritarianism that come from the 20th century: uniformed men goose-stepping in jackboots, masses of people chanting party slogans, streets lined with giant portraits of the leader, secret opposition meetings in basements, interrogations under naked light bulbs, executions by firing squad. Similar things still happen—in China, North Korea, Iran. But I’d be surprised if this essay got me hauled off to prison in America. Authoritarianism in the 21st century looks different, because it is different. Political scientists have tried to find a new term for it: illiberal democracy, competitive authoritarianism, right-wing populism. In countries such as Hungary, Turkey, Venezuela, and India, democracies aren’t overthrown, nor do they collapse all at once. Instead, they erode. Opposition parties, the judiciary, the press, and civil-society groups aren’t destroyed, but over time they lose their life, staggering on like zombie institutions, giving the impression that democracy is still alive. The blurred line between democracy and autocracy is an important feature of modern authoritarianism. How do we know when we’ve crossed it? These sorts of regimes have constitutions, but the teeth are missing. Elections take place, but they’re no longer truly fair or free—the party in power controls the electoral machinery, and if the results aren’t desirable, they’ll be challenged and likely overturned. To keep their jobs, civil servants have to prove not their competence but their personal loyalty to the leader. Independent government officers—prosecutors, inspectors general, federal commissioners, central bankers—are fired and their positions handed to flunkies. The legislature, in the hands of the ruling party, becomes a rubber stamp for the executive. Courts still hear cases, but judges are appointed for their political views, not their expertise, and their opinions, cloaked in neutral-sounding legal terms, predictably give the leader what he wants, endorsing his most illiberal policies and immunizing him from accountability. The rule of law amounts to favors for friends and persecution for enemies. The separation of powers turns out to be a paper-thin gentleman’s agreement. There are no meaningful checks on the leader’s power.

The tools Trump has used so far to bend institutions to his will, such as withholding federal funding, are powerful, but they pale in comparison to the power of debanking. An organization subjected to such treatment would be unable to pay its employees, manage its endowment, or receive funding from government or private sources. An individual would be unable to receive direct deposits from their employer, get a mortgage from a bank, or pay their bills. “If you’re made a persona non grata by the Fed, that’s completely debilitating,” Menand told me. “It’s the financial equivalent of cutting someone off from the electricity grid.”

After announcing that he was deploying the National Guard to Memphis, Trump was asked why he signed an order lowering flags nationwide after Kirk’s killing during an event in Utah, but didn’t do so after former Democratic state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed in June. Trump replied, “Well, if the governor had asked me to do that, I would have done that.” “But the governor of Minnesota didn’t ask me,” the president said. On Friday, ICE hit a new milestone: The agency has now signed more than 1,000 so-called 287(g) agreements nationwide. These agreements, which deputize local police and jails to perform certain immigration enforcement functions, have exploded under Trump. At the end of the Biden presidency, ICE had just 135 287(g) deals in place; now there are 1,001—a 641 percent increase. About half of these agreements are what ICE calls task force agreements, which allow state and local cops to essentially act as immigration agents while fulfilling their regular police duties. If these sound familiar—and familiarly problematic—it’s because they were discontinued in 2012, following a Department of Justice investigation the year before that found widespread racial profiling by Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, then led by the notorious Joe Arpaio. The Trump administration brought task forces back this year, and ICE has signed more than 500 of these particular agreements across 33 states.

The principal of Annunciation School sent a letter to Vice President Vance pleading for intervention after a deadly shooting occurred on the church grounds last week. Matthew DeBoer’s three children were on school grounds during the active shooter situation and knelt as gunshots pierced the windows in the sanctuary and surrounding areas. His letter addressed both the vice president second lady Usha Vance, whom he told, “we ARE in a war.” “This does not have to keep happening … It shouldn’t be easier for this shooter to get a gun — or anyone — than it is for my child to see their pediatrician,” DeBoer wrote in his letter to the vice president, as reported by The Minneapolis Star. “It shouldn’t be easier for this shooter to get a gun — or anyone — to walk up to a church, to shoot 116 shots into stained glass windows with children feet away from them for 2 and a half minutes than it is to order … dinner on Door Dash, but it is,” he added. Three different weapons were used by the 23-year-old suspected shooter, Robin Westman. Two children were killed, and 18 others were injured during the active shooter situation.

The leaders of Russia, China, and North Korea are not good men. They preside over brutal autocracies replete with secret police and prison camps. But they are, nevertheless, serious men, and they know an unserious man when they see one. For nearly a decade, they have taken Donald Trump’s measure, and they have clearly reached a conclusion: The president of the United States is not worthy of their respect. Wednesday’s military parade in Beijing is the most recent evidence that the world’s authoritarians consider Trump a lightweight. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korea’s maximum nepo baby, Kim Jong Un, gathered to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. (Putin’s Belarusian satrap, Alexander Lukashenko, was also on hand.) The American president was not invited: After all, what role did the United States play in defeating Japan and liberating Eurasia? Instead, Trump, much like America itself, was left to watch from the sidelines. But the parade was worse than a mere snub. Putin, Xi, and Kim stood in solidarity while reviewing China’s military might only weeks after Putin came to Alaska and refused Trump’s pleas to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. The White House tried to spin that ill-advised summit into at least a draw between Putin and Trump, but when the Kremlin’s dictator shows up with no interest in negotiation, speaks first at a press conference, and then caps the day by declining a carefully planned lunch and flying home, that’s a humiliation, not an exchange of views.

As I reported in July, Chavez-DeRemer’s Labor Department is in the process of rulemaking to end goals for companies with federal contracts to have at least seven percent of their employees have a disability. “When you strip those…provisions away, what is left of [Section] 503, and what are they actually enforcing?” Anupa Iyer Geevarghese, a former deputy director of policy in the Labor Department’s Office of Federal Contractor Compliance Programs, asked in July. “Anything that gives you a strong basis for enforcement is sort of whittled away.”

Both judicial and administrative warrants are legal orders that authorize searches and seizures, but they differ significantly in their purpose, the level of proof required, and the issuing authority.
An ICE administrative warrant is a document, issued by a federal agency such as Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), purporting to document their authority to arrest a person suspected of violating immigration laws. These administrative documents are not signed by a neutral magistrate or judge but rather an immigration officer like an ICE agent or immigration judge. An ICE administrative warrant is NOT a judicial warrant. ICE administrative warrants do not give ICE officials authority to enter a place where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy, without consent. If this happens—state clearly that you do not consent to them entering but do not physically resist. If ICE officials have already entered, then ask them to leave and state that you do not consent to a search. A judicial warrant is an official court order signed by a judge or magistrate that authorizes a search of private property, seizure, or arrest based on probable cause that a crime is being committed or has been committed. A judicial warrant will: Specify the specific address to be searched. Specify the time period in which the search must take place. Particularly describe the place or person, or both, to be searched and things to be seized. Be issued by a court and signed by a Judge or magistrate.

On Wednesday, the Trump administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on imports from India. This might be just another episode in Donald Trump’s ongoing trade war, except that India is a major exporter of spices: among them, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Together, along with allspice and ginger, these form the backbone of the pumpkin-spice mix. Like so many other goods, pumpkin spice—the taste, smell, and spirit of fall—might get more expensive. When the United Nations marked the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples last week, it signaled a growing recognition of a new kind of extraction. Artificial intelligence, or AI, systems are being trained on massive troves of online data, much of it collected without the consent of the communities involved. For Indigenous peoples, this new form of extraction has raised questions about who controls their histories, languages, and cultural knowledge and whether the technology will erase or distort them entirely. With this in mind, tribes and nations have been pushing to assert “data sovereignty” — the right to control how information is collected and used — and claim a seat at the table as tech companies and governments set the rules for AI oversight.

Replacing total potatoes, including baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes, or French fries with whole grains was associated with a lower risk of T2D, with the largest reduction observed when replacing with French fries. Replacing French fries with non-starchy and starchy vegetables, legumes, and even refined grains was also associated with lower risk of T2D. In contrast, replacing baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes or total potatoes with white rice was associated with a higher risk of T2D. Our findings underscore that the association between potato intake and T2D risk depends on the specific foods used as replacement. The findings also align with current dietary recommendations that promote the inclusion of whole grains as part of a healthy diet for the prevention of T2D.
