Hurricane Melissa has made landfall on the south coast of eastern Cuba, as a category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120mph.

Life-threatening storm surge, flash flooding, landslides and damaging winds are expected for eastern Cuba.

Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified into a category 4 hurricane.

Melissa is tracking over sea surface temperatures that are 1.4C above average and according to the @climatecentral.org CSI Ocean tool these have been made up to 500-700 times more likely by human caused climate change.

The @metoffice.gov.uk have issued an amber wind warning for central and northern Scotland for Monday ⚠️

Storm Floris will bring unseasonably strong and disruptive winds.

Wind gusts of 50-70 mph are expected for many and are likely to reach 80-90 mph on some exposed coasts, hills and bridges.

Temperatures across the UK today and over the weekend have been made more likely by climate change. The @climatecentral.org Climate Shift Index shows that the temperatures have been made at least 3-5 times more likely.

Climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and more intense.

There is a 80% chance of a tropical depression forming in the East Pacific in a few days.

A yellow thunderstorm warning is in place today for Wales and parts of England.

Very heavy downpours are possible, and these could give 20-30mm of rain in less than an hour, or potentially 40-50mm in 1-2 hours in a few places.

Lightning, gusty winds and hail are also possible.

Thursday could be the warmest start to May on record for the UK with temperatures reaching 28-29C.

Here is the latest forecast track for Tropical Cyclone Alfred from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is currently expected to cross the Moreton Bay Islands during Saturday morning. Before making landfall in SE Queensland between Maroochydore & Brisbane later in the day on Saturday.

The UK will be very mild over the next few days. For parts of eastern England tomorrow we could see temperatures reach 16C, the February average is around 8C.

Looking at the @climatecentral.org Climate Shift Index, these temperatures have been made at least 4-5 times more likely by climate change.

The @metoffice.bsky.social red wind warning for Scotland was updated earlier and now covers the whole of SW Scotland as well as central Scotland.

The @metoffice.bsky.social currently have two rare red weather warnings in place.

One for the whole of Northern Ireland which is valid for 0700-1400 today (Friday 24th January).

Another for central and south-west Scotland which is valid for 1000-1700 today (Friday).

According to Met Éireann (The Irish Meteorological Service) a wind gust of 114mph (183km/h) has been recorded at Mace Head. This is provisionally the strongest wind gust that has recorded in Ireland.
