“What makes bone more receptive than glass?” Ellana asked. “It is more porous,” Solas replied, “ as are wood and leather. Some believe those nooks are better places for the magic to settle. Others argue it is the residual lifeforce that binds with the spell. In truth, we know only the outcome, not the reason.” He smiled wanly at Ellana’s arched eyebrows, her lips parted in surprise. “Did you believe I knew everything about world? I do not. I had hoped our victory would afford me boundless time to explore and learn more of it, but my presence was—” He hesitated, hearing Mythal’s words, as weighty as her body against his under the boughs of the trees they would fell to lay Arlathan’s foundations: I need you here. Had she? He had believed so then, and stood ready to build with her a haven for the People that would shelter them in peace forever. Yet, he had seen her play host at a lavish gathering—rich wine, fabrics, and frippery—while the city burned in Elgar’nan’s play for power. To Ellana, he said, “My presence was requested in those early days, when the empire was taking shape. After, I simply…remained.” Extending his right hand, he brushed it over her cheek. “Until I was drawn away to discover wonders I could not have conceived of.” She flushed under his touch but did not demur, and pride licked flamelike under Solas’s ribs. She believed rather than doubted the praise was sincere.

I realized I haven’t updated on Dr. Housecat in a while. GOOD NEWS! He’s out and about in the house now with no visible limp and no desire to go back outside. He’s incredibly snuggly and loves pets. He’s still panicky about food after a life of food insecurity, but he’s happy here and we love him!

Ghilan’nain does her best work just after dawn, when a silo of easterly, risen sun enters a natural aperture in the cave’s ceiling and cuts between dripping stalactites to illuminate the slab of stone where her reagents are laid. A bowl of azurite ground to powder so fine it stirs with her breath. Shavings from leafless, tangled herbs the color of ash. Thick glass flasks filled with mixtures of honey and bear fat. The scents waken her fully, though she keeps the night’s dreams near; it is from those boundless, extraordinary imaginings she draws inspiration to create.

She let him guide her head back, open-mouthed as the kiss broke. He licked at her tongue, his breath hot, and trailed wet, parted lips to her chin. Following the sensitive skin stretched taut over her throat, he found the mark he’d left two nights before, only now beginning to fade. Ellana’s approving moan earned a soft suck: the love bite renewed. None among her clan had caught her with it, and sooner or later her luck would run out, but suppositions and whispers made no matter to her; not when Fen’Harel had swept lower to loosen the laces of her shirt with his teeth. An astonished sound, halfway to a laugh, escaped her and she looked down to find him grinning: a rare moment of puckish play that made her lightheaded. He could ply her body as effortlessly as he did the Veil threads, then just as easily turn passion to joy. She had known no other man like him, and even as she sweetly returned his smile, she wanted him as fiercely as she had wanted anything in her life. What of becoming First? Her greatest desire, and impossible without him. But for once the immediacy of it dwindled, outweighed by the need to feel his bare skin on hers.

I meant to reply with this little preview when I got this, but I've been so crazy busy, I couldn't get to it until today. However, YES MORE SUGAR BOMB!
It wasn’t long before the Magic E-Sign email arrived again, and he saw that Lucy’s addendum had been added to the bottom of the contract. A little box awaited his initials, as promised. He tapped them in easily and shipped the contract back off. There was some momentary deliberation about mixing a brunchtime bloody mary in humble celebration, but before he could inventory the ingredients—celery wasn’t something he kept on hand, usually—the phone began to vibrate, and more insistently than with Sebastian’s strings of texts. Cooper wished he’d fixed a fortifying drink earlier as a phone icon shivered at the center of the screen. It was a miracle his voice didn’t crack as he accepted the call, put the phone to his ear, and said, “Hi, Lucy.” “Hello, Cooper.” There was no doubt from the sound of his name that she was the same woman who’d said it—moaned it—in a voice note last night, and as much as he missed the gasped yes after, what Lucy said next had him smiling, if just to hear her speak to him.

It's WIP Wednesday! Ch. 16 of These Hands #solavellan
She had left her own staff in her shared aravel, and recognized sheepishly that she hadn’t come to the shrine with lessons in spellwork in mind. It seemed they weren’t first in Fen’Harel’s thoughts, either; as soon as he’d set his weapon down, he was reaching for Ellana, beckoning her to nestle close to him, her back against his chest and his right arm settled around her middle. He swept her unbound hair away from her neck and pressed a kiss there. “I’m sorry I didn’t bring food and drink,” she told him softly. “My people kept me late.” “Your stories held them rapt,” said Fen’Harel. The joy that had come with the clan’s response to her telling paled when set against the heated approval in his voice. “You remembered,” she said. His reply, with his lips, grazed her ear. “These visits are not easily forgotten."

WIP Wednesday strikes again and I have actual progress to report!

I missed cunty Anaris from Ch. 7 of These Hands, so he's back in Ch. 15, being such a bitch to Solas XD
“Now here is a surprise,” came a sardonic twist on a greeting. “The stray wolf and his loyal pup.” Anaris tapped the end of his staff with an arched foot, swinging it like a jaunty pendulum as he started toward Solas and Felassan. “After our last meeting, Fen, I admit I expected to find you drooling at Mythal’s heel when she mustered her forces against mine, but imagine my puzzlement when your place was empty. “Speculation abounds as to where you had gotten away to, but I would not have guessed it was hiding in Dirthamen’s skirts.” He lifted a winged eyebrow. “Unless you too sneaked in under his nose.” “I owe you no answers,” said Solas. “Owe me?” Anaris rejoined. “No, you owe me nothing. But I do hold this library and all within it. I can take more.” Solas sneered, curls of pitch smoke spiraling away as energies gathered about his shoulders. “You can attempt it.”

For #DAFanFriday I have an excerpt from Ch. 15 of These Hands, If Not Gods. This one goes out to all the library fans. Solas goes on a heist in Vir Dirthara to steal a vessel of knowledge of June's eluvian-craft.

The ragged ends of scrolls that would have, on any other day, tempted him to stop and investigate their secrets rubbed along the wool of his jacket, so much stouter than the delicate fabrics he had worn before he had fled Arlathan. Those would have snagged on the roughened terminus of the shelf as he rounded a tight corner, his gaze landing squarely on a case squirreled away at the back of a warren of dusty tomes. It was sturdy ironbark bound in leather and steel, but had not been locked by key or by magic—careless of June, or more likely arrogance. He had expected such a small vessel of memory to be overlooked in a place he would rarely go, and it was for that reason Solas was convinced it contained an essential understanding of the eluvians June had striven to conceal. He was an exceptional general and wright of weapons, but he underestimated the interest of others in acquiring knowledge in oft-neglected places. The case’s lid opened soundlessly, revealing an interior lined with six narrow panels of flawless looking glass. A round-bottomed flask, its cork crowned with silver, sat cradled in blue velvet at the center, small but reflected over and over in the mirrors, until it appeared to contain a thousand of the same simple vessel.

“These far-flung patrons,” Solas had said to the librarian, “do they speak an altogether different tongue?” “Than Elvhen? No. It can be coarse, but ours is the only language left.” Her nostrils had flared in disapproval. “Would that we had bothered to preserve the songs of the dreamers. But no, we wasted that knowledge. We—” She had stopped abruptly, catching herself on the company she was in. “Ah, I forget myself.” Solas had not bothered to acknowledge her remorse, for it was far outweighed by his for the part he had played in the loss of those songs.

Dual POV doesn't come easily to me, and often it can be difficult to make the shift between Solas and Ellana in These Hands, but Ch. 15 is flowing quite well, actually!
Felassan grasped the staff that lay beside him, handling it as effortlessly as he would a limb. He too had known weapons before any other tool. “After you,” he said to Solas, with a tip of his head toward the path down the hillside they had scouted; the one that would lead them to a door left conveniently unlatched by a soldier under the forgetful influence of a spirit of mischief. The leather grip Solas had recently rebound to his war staff creaked in his tight hold, and then he was advancing in a low crouch, the spring-warmed soil soft on the soles of his bare feet. Northern climes were a welcome respite from mountain snows, which lingered well into midsummer. Since he and Felassan had pitched camp nearly a year past, they had traded their tents for cabins, but the drawings of the stronghold he had made remained unrealized. When it is built, he had said to Ellana Lavellan, you will be welcome there. He had meant it then, in the shrine to Fen’Harel, but without a sizable eluvian to bring supplies and builders, the place was only an ambition. And neither could Ellana pass through the mirror, unless Solas could acquire June’s flask. Grinding determination between his teeth, he prowled along the tree line, alert to any errant party of Anaris’s scouts. The spirits had assured him the way would be clear, but he would not get another chance at this; and after so long—so much fastidious planning and risk and waiting—he refused to fail.
