Overall- we uncovered novel hypotheses related to a gut-adipose-liver axis that should be tested in future studies that focus on a broader range of MASLD physiology and evaluate people with and without diabetes and obesity.

We did not find differences in biomarkers of gut permeability or colon histology (by group or overall). What we did find were colonic gene modules that were correlated with adipose insulin resistance encroachment.
June 30, 2025 at 5:21 PM
We found a range of encroachment from low to high- similar to what has been seen in people w diabetes/obesity. It could be that insulin resistance is a key driver since all participants had obesity. We then set out to determine what might distinguish high vs low encroachment.
June 30, 2025 at 5:21 PM
The short answer is no. We did not find more encroachment in people with steatosis or fibrosis as compared to controls. However…

Feeling energized and hopeful after a fantastic #Nutrition2025

It was my honor to contribute to a sci comm workshop and I enjoyed several key sessions on gut microbiome and GLP-1 RAs.

Part of resisting is speaking up, uplifting, doing good. I had an amazing experience giving a keynote where the topic was courage. It revealed my story about finding my voice and had some microbiome innovation woven in. #geeksthatspeak

Every day I feel like I get punched in the gut with all the madness from the regime in the White House. But I won’t stop encouraging girls and all young people to go into STEM. So let’s celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science! Here are some recent adventures with the Girl Scouts.

Had the chance to record a podcast with my local Girl Scout troop. First episode is about girls in science & storytelling. Then, we recorded an unexpected bonus episode with a few Girl Scouts that brought hope and laughter. The future is bright! I’ll post links when they air! #geeksthatspeak

The negative energy balance was accompanied by robust changes in gut microbiota composition, increased SCFA production and alterations in enteroendocrine hormones. There were NO differences in energy expenditure, appetite or ad lib food intake.

This variability translates to some hosts on the MBD losing 73 additional kcals in feces compared to the WD while others lost 390 kcals.

The primary finding is that when the gut microbiome is modulated within each human host- there is less total energy absorbed on the microbiome enhancer diet. This negative energy balance is HIGHLY variable between hosts.

Recreating my fav “other site” post so y’all know a bit about our science.

Does the #gutmicrobiome contribute to human energy balance and thus, weight regulation? Check out our pub to see what we uncovered: rdcu.be/ddrP7

One of my passions is to encourage girls (and all young people) to go into STEM. Working with a few local groups to increase my reach. We’re going to need these kids to clean up the mess half the adults in this country just made.
