Cutting off communication seems to be the first step in this process. Even if you are inclined to ignore humanity, this is fiscally irresponsible.

End.

More broadly, cutting edge therapies for all diseases from Alzheimer's disease to cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.- are going to be compromised if the research enterprise and hospital systems are financially strained.

cover my staff/trainees salaries, and I feel, add to our understanding of Alzheimer's disease. Now, the future of this work and the stability of my lab, like many others, is in question.

On a personal note, next week I was supposed to find out if a grant I got an amazing score on, after being rigorously reviewed (aka torn apart) by my peers, to test a novel therapeutic approach for Alzheimer's disease, would be funded. It would anchor my lab for the next five years,

From submission to being awarded, it takes at least a year... if you can get funded on the first try. These cancellations are impacting submissions and decisions from 2024, which will have far reaching effects moving forward.

Because these executive orders were enacted without clarity, study sections and funding councils are being cancelled without explanation. There are only 3 times a year (sometimes less) we can apply for these big grants.

If these executive orders are not reversed, it will devastate research, therapeutic development & hospital systems reducing their operating margin/bottom line. It’ll severely restrict who we can train as our next generation of scientists & physicians & grossly impact the quality of our work force

In essence, I'm a small business owner, grants are my operating budget. Not allowing the NIH to communicate with researchers and in many cases physicians, is devastating to our research, clinical trials/operation, and general health. This is unacceptable.

funding that we, as scientists, have competitively applied for and been awarded. In every grant, there is an additional pot of money- nearly 30%- that goes directly to the university to "pay rent", maintain administrative support, contribute to upkeep, or keep the lights on, so to speak.
