Best of luck! Feel free to ask if more questions come up.

I think it’s primarily the congestion in the binnenstad for domestic day trips.

Foreign day trippers cause some of the same problems that overnighters do, treating the city like Vegas.

You spread from center which helps. Also west is best so makes sense.

All that said, still enjoying living here. Nice talking lil train day trips, walking to my friends houses and grocery store, having 100s of close options for food/drink, enjoying Dutch nature (serious).

The national sport is complaining, so consider it a sign of my integration journey.

PS on housing: when moving here my eSIM only phone was a PITA. Had to hire a rental agent in the end because it delayed me getting a Dutch number and you couldn’t use Funda w/o a local #.

If you’re in Amsterdam, transit sucks.

Biking is getting more dangerous and less pleasant.

Owning a car is crazy.

GVB is pricey, killed all my trams, and now may take the bus on weekends.

Biking to work is 20 min but the bus is 1hr.

Other places (Den Haag & R’dam) seem better as an outsider.

Also you will feel intensely American the first time you need to get service work done for your house. A lot of wading through BS, ghosting, low quality work etc until you find someone who gives a crap about their job.

The people are mixed. Locals can be quite friendly and social but it’ll be hard to break into a Dutch circle. I taught myself Dutch before moving, volunteer in a Dutch organization, go to HOA game nights, etc but the sentiment is why make friends with ‘expats’ because they all leave in five years.

I know a lot of DAFTies.

Tax season is a perennial headache for them. Dealing with two countries tax codes as a first time business owner isn’t fun, even if you hire tax prep & CPA.

Amsterdam rent is also terrible and my first landlord was a slum lord. You have little protection against it here.

Het geeft de seizoenen wat balans. In de zon voel ik me schuldig als ik niet buiten ben, dus het is altijd go go go.

Een grijze dag zegt: ‘nee, het is goed. Blijf thuis. Neem een dagje rust.’

“The figure is €400 million higher than in 2023”

Wow hey look it’s the money for OV. So that’s where it went!

Man the podcast has put some years on Adam Friedland.

The fad is the assumption that we are close to achieving AGI and replacing all white collar jobs.
April 24, 2025 at 6:33 AM
A maybe related take I hold:

“They suck and aren’t useful, compared to people’s expectations.”

Dopes like the Shopify CEO who insist most white collar jobs can be replaced by LLMs now are just huffing a hype cloud.

The original statement feels related to this anti-overhype vibe.

Ask any Dutch about Mark Rutte and this will not be surprising.

Down for some solid tarring and feathering. Not enough of that these days, I reckon.

Based on my use of them in Amsterdam… they’re not unlike sharrows.

Just like parkeerbeleid…it’s the thought that counts haha.
