But he'll be fine; there's herbal ointment given to him by a local shaman on a shelf near the hearth and it soothes the bain of his old wound better than anything he could have ever found in the capital. He yawns; it's still dark outside and where they are now, they rise with the sun and go to sleep when the moon takes over. He retrieves the ointment and walks back to their bed before he applies some to his scar. The pain heightens at first, acute and burning, and Hwi sets his jaw to keep quiet. He doesn't want to wake Seonho, still asleep next to him, his face relaxed and peaceful like it rarely looks while he's awake. It reminds Hwi of early mornings in the smithy, sneaking around so Yeon didn't notice, stealing kisses as they got dressed. Seonho used to have such a beautiful smile, lighting up his whole face, and his laughter, to this day, remains the most beautiful sound Hwi ever heard. He fell in love with that smile, and that laugh, and he remembers how easy it once was to make each other happy.
