Safe to add the Fair Political Practices Commission to the long list of California progressive reforms coopted by NIMBY's?

How is building more housing not a shared community interest?

We make a councilmember get a day job - but a day job aligned with the public interest topic we voted him in on is a disqualifier. Straight up disenfranchisement.

I want to believe the French carefully decided that the public injury of inelegant handrail returns outweighs any personal injury.

Hydrant pressure loss began to be reported shortly after this photo was taken at 5:47pm. 40 burned homes can drain 1000 gpm from a typical 8” main that normally supplies max 2000 gpm. Hydrants use 750 gpm.

Only the Pacific or dying winds were going to stop it at this point.

Trees are very difficult to burn compared to houses. Moisture content of 100% vs 10% for stabilized framing lumber.

Watching this house go up in flames was my holy shite moment. This was in the morning when winds were calm - now imagine 50mph gusts with 3% humidity.

Will take a repeat conflagration to force change it seems. The fuel is recovering nicely!

This picture from 5:47pm shows flames marching down Iliff - one house to the next. No embers here with a cross wind at the periphery (note clear sky).

The difficult question is whether water is of any help with closely spaced homes igniting in 30mph+ winds, when firefighter efforts are limited to life safety.

But water is useful as the winds die - and water meters must prevent destroyed homes from depressurizing the system.

And yeah the garages converted to ADUs. Very curious about percent of tenants with cars.

Credit to Aussie politicians for actually making changes in response to disasters (see also guns and wildfire home hardening).

Maybe in Berlin - but RC tenants in car dependent cities with limited street parking and roadway capacity see it differently.
December 12, 2025 at 4:51 PM
That never happens around here.

Actually amazing how much localized winds drive these fires

Thick chaparral only grows in the hills, where bone dry Santa Anas get funneled through the canyons. Embers get carried for miles.

The Temporary Contemporary was a quiet, restrained bit of magic.

So cal gas offering incentives for fire rebuilds to use gas - including outdoor heaters 🤬

A friend’s father the writer William Norton commissioned Gehry to design a Venice boardwalk fronting house. One of the great 80’s California houses.

Just good old batons at the 80’s punk shows. Actually kinda sad that today’s cops can’t begin to approach to that kind of dexterity.
