My own favourite is Kertesz, though there is also an early 1950s version by Szell and the Concertgebouw, also on Decca, which is well worth hearing.

Thomson tended to be overlooked during his career, but he knew this repertoire like the back of his hand.

For all the many fine versions which have come out since, this recording remains a reference point- its impact remains remarkable.

Certainly one of the best Turandot recordings, and the conjunction of Sutherland and Caballe works very well in the last act. I also love hearing the very different tenor voices of Pavarotti and Pears addressing each other before Turandot's entrance.

If you can find it, Sargent's earlier mono version originally on Decca is also very well worth hearing.

Among the many versions of the RVW symphonies now available, I still feel that those made by Boult in the 1950s have a special place, despite the dated sound. The composer was present at the sessions for many of them; the 'Sea Symphony' recording in some ways has never been surpassed.

I like Ansermet's Haydn very much- the Paris symphonies set is stylish throughout.
