Given the scope of the allegations floating around, I suppose the concern is having to doing explainers on the Tanner scale and pivoting to "so actually, it's still technically not the p-word, it's hebephilia" might be a bridge too far...

Also, some of the jobs he tried were rent-collector and manager on his FIL’s plantation, jobs he was “catastrophically bad” at precisely because of his fundamental decency.

Just based on your description, my first guess would be bonding over mutual animus toward normie liberals.

Something about trading essential Liberty for lower grocery prices and deserving (and getting) neither.

Vance was a "Chua Pet" at Yale. Hillbilly Elegy wasn't even an original project, it was a spin-off of Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld's "The Triple Package."

Some suggested reading:
- Bitterly Divided by David Williams
- Rebels Against the Confederacy by Barton Myers
- Free State of Jones by Victoria Bynum
- Sisson's Kingdom by Paul Dotson

The reality is that the ACW was exactly the brutal mess you allude to in the South.

I think that's correct. Though, I also don't know if it is most helpful to compare ourselves to Germany when the US certainly has a pretty rich history of polarized violence. What about a "National Redemption" thesis?

Another radical thought: it's not the job of an electoral party or broad ideology to provide specific guidance on non-electoral political organization and engagement strategies.

It's also disingenuous to claim that the lack of such guidance is the same as saying "you *only* need to vote."

Incidentally, some confederate envoys floated the idea of the CSA swearing some nominal fealty to Napoleon III in exchange for support and recognition.

I would describe it as a wants to be lazy middle management situation. You get the perks of position and power, but don’t have to exert yourself beyond relaying directives from your superiors and parroting platitudes to your subordinates.
September 3, 2025 at 2:05 PM
Ironically though, Jeff Davis gave speeches in front of the Confederate Congress deriding Northerners as being descended from woke Puritan agitators… so of course the South wants to separate from these intolerable people…

My most likely scenario is that a small but significant rural segment of voters is getable and Democrats will be somewhat successful in getting them. But, the GOP will use some new wedge issue(s) to try to divide and/or depress other segments of the center-left coalition to negate this.
