Casual Good Beer Guide Pub Ticker since 1982. In 2023 I visited all 140 Kent pubs in that years 50th edition. I quite like a long walk too, normally to a pub. #Thames #Ridgeway #NorthDownsWay #GreensandWay #LondonUnderground
Man of Kent based in Faversham.
I have some personal news. This happened last week.

So then, Faversham is all set for Festivus.

I was there earlier in the year and found the grave of Cecil. One of the wisest people to run the country.

Followed by the Tonbridge Ebony Moon. A lovely rich solid stout. They do keep their beer well here.

The Pilots Rest, Sheerness. GBG✅. Not been here before. The beer is actually very good. Locals are very friendly and like talking. Not so good on the listening. I’m drinking the Kent Green Ernest, one of their green hop beers. All sorts of fruit flavours with a long dry aftertaste.

I don’t generally like to stereotype BMW drivers, but this isn’t helping any.

Canterbury Cathedral last night in all of its late evening golden hour glory. Spent the evening at the Marlowe with Mary Beard.

A second pint of the Oakham x Titanic Noir collaboration. Dark and fruity with a long dry finish. I need to come back to try the Brown soup though.

The Queens Head, Newton, Cambridgeshire. GBG✅
The only one of the big five I’ve not previously visited, and what a pub it is. Thriving on a Sunday lunchtime. The Adnams Bitter seemed darker and more refreshing than I remember it from Southwold. Ploughman’s and roasty bites were a delight.

Just arrived.

You’re not seeing it at its best with all that scaffolding. These are my shots from July 2024.

Mitre, Richmond. GBG✅
Nice little back street local. People coming in just for takeaway pizzas. Beer range is interesting for London. A pint of Saltaire South Island goes down well. The second pint is of Stancill Folklore which smells and tastes of peanuts 🥜. This happens once in a while.

Sitting by the Thames at Chiswick listening to Sandy Denny era Fairport Convention (Tale in a Hard Time). A reasonable pint of Landlord, though I have just walked 7 miles from Kensington. All is right with the world today. Onwards to Richmond.

In a week of poor service I couldn’t fault this place. Both pints arrived within a minute of being ordered and it was pretty busy. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable too. That matters. I had a second pint of the Woodfords collaboration Hooked on Vista. Got to see the heavy horses too.

Malthouse Kitchen, Hook Norton, Oxon. Managed to get a table inside as we were having the ploughmans. Surrounded by ladies who lunch. More of the old family breweries ought to do this as it brings in the punters. The beer was as good as it could be, this first pint is the Limelight.

The Cross House Tavern, Tewkesbury, Glos. A revisit here. Everyone in the pub was very chatty. Beer solid though not quite cool enough. I think I had the Tewkesbury Pale followed by a Bristol Beer Factory Milk Stout. The cheese roll needed some onion.

I say lucky, but the Butty Bach was fairly poor to be honest. Shame. Still, when I took the first one back there was no fuss and the pump clip was immediately turned around.

Olde Black Bear, Tewkesbury, Glos. GBG ✅. Well some parts of it are olde but the rest of it is bang up to date. They must have spent a small fortune on the new makeover and riverside terrace. Third time lucky with the beers. 1 was off, 2 ran out while they were pouring it.
August 15, 2025 at 8:14 AM
Tewkesbury. I do like the fact that between the Black Bear and the White Bear they built a modern cul de sac called Twixtbears.
August 15, 2025 at 8:08 AM
A second pint. This time the Golden Embers. More than a touch of sourness in this one.
August 15, 2025 at 8:04 AM
Inferno Brewery Tap, Tewkesbury, Glos. GBG ✅. A strange little bar in a garage in the car park of a disused pub. The locals seem very interested in fire arms. Beer very good but not really to my taste. Not sure I could drink a lot of this. A pint of the Spark.

Hey BBC. I’m not sure this is “News”.

The White Hart, Canterbury. £5.60 for an average pint of Master Brew. First time in Kent over a fiver. I used to work a stones throw from here in 1988. Disappointingly the wonderful cricketing mural they had on this wall has gone. A typical Shep’s refurbishment, knocking the soul out of a pub.
August 2, 2025 at 3:57 PM
Back at the Thomas Tallis in Canterbury drinking a sublime pint of Tonbridge Easy Street Pale. I normally sit outside here, even in the depths of winter. That’s my blood pressure medication for you.

The Morris Clown, Bampton. GBG ✅
The most unfriendly welcome to a pub I’ve had in many a year. Timing was bad, during the Euros final. But, couldn’t get to the bar, locals told me not to stand in their way, and the landlord was sneery. Dog blockers everywhere. No one cared if I was there or not.
