A day of insanity in the Chiltern Hills. The incredibly rare red helleborine still surviving the scorching heat, red kites floating overhead and albino fragrant orchids. Whilst inspecting, I noticed a Dactylodenia (conopsea x fuchsii) nearby! @ukorchids.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Also from the Cairngorms, northern marsh and heath spotted orchids. Also creeping lady’s tresses right off a trail in Abernethy Forest and what I assume was once a lesser twayblade @ukorchids.bsky.social

Heath fragrant, coralroot, lesser butterfly and even small-white orchid flowering in the Cairngorms today. Heath fragrant was my favourite, smelled lovely! @ukorchids.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Burnt-tip orchids (including a strange pale variant), fly orchids, white helleborines and common spotted orchids from the Pegsdon Hills area. Also lots of kites, pasqueflowers (some still in flower) and woodland strawberries @ukorchids.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

So, they did it again. Someone has again destroyed Cambridge Airport's lizard orchid. The same one which last year reached 1.1m tall. This is a wildlife crime, as the orchid is legally protected. I've reported it to the police @ukorchids.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

My first encounter with frog orchids at a fen in Cambridgeshire. And one green-winged orchid still in flower. Most were absolutely tiny, but some are the size of early marsh orchids! The flowers themselves, however, look nothing like frogs! @ukorchids.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

A truly unexpected discovery... a very rare man orchid in a field just east of Cambridge.
Observed the orchid whilst a cuckoo was trying to distract me

Loads of lady orchids at Bonsai Bank, including some massive specimens. Hordes of people looking for a leucistic lady orchid...until I found another one!!
Other things found today was the Duke of Burgundy, fly orchids and a GIANT early purple orchid!

On the 5th March, I presented my summer 2024 research in UK Parliament as part of the Posters in Parliament 2025 event. My project was one of only 2 selected from my university. The presentation took place in Portcullis House

Starting off the 2025 orchid season with 5 lovely giant orchids coming into flower somewhere in the UK. There were 13 plants in total, including many non-flowering rosettes.
Unlike many rare orchids, this one was also very very beautiful
