Is this about the video of 4 film school students talking about how terrible Wicked looked without giving one example? Cuz that shiz was dumb.

She definitely contributed, but the way she moved thru the world was very different from one season to the next. My husband and I both remarked that it seemed like they made her dumber in between moments of helpfulness.

I found that the character changed in a profound way from her first to her second season. First season - responsible, helpful, direct. Second season - scattered, less helpful, less direct. Her second season was so inconsistent with the first, I felt they diluted her smarts.

Take my money! I remember discovering this video on Saturday Morning Videos (the sporadic companion to Friday Night Videos) before my improv class in Chicago a million years ago. I got to class and everyone was talking about this very video...

Wicked (cont)...& generally enjoyed myself enough that when a subpar moment rolled by I was able to clock it & move on. Not every film is for everyone but I bought what Wicked is selling. Added bonus-the film is bringing so many people back to the theater, & indirectly supporting live theater. 6/fin

Wicked (cont) I don't require a film to be perfect. Audiences watch films to be manipulated, and all I ask is to be successfully manipulated frequently enough that I enjoy myself. Wicked did that consistently - I cried multiple times throughout, laughed, was dazzled by the spectacle ... 5/

Wicked (cont) That said, what Wicked the film has is an impeccable cast that excels at selling what they've been asked to sell. Even at the film's weakest moments, the cast reach past the faults and effortlessly engage the audience w/ honest, grounded, emotionally truthful performances. 4/

Wicked (cont.) The "women fighting over a guy" plot device is an unforced error in the narrative, as is Madam Morrible serving the Wizard when she is obviously powerful enough to rule the kingdom herself. And the story doesn't require the role (Or Bowen Yang and his counterpart) 3/

Wicked (cont) The first Film/Act is a simple but effective narrative w/unnecessary added film backstory.
Second Film/Act is bogged down in the attempt to creatively back into & simultaneously subvert Wizard of Oz. First film/act: unique songs. Second film/act: generic songs save for "For Good." 2/

It is my contention that film festival audiences love to over love movies.
