Oh absolutely, I sometimes feel like I rely a bit heavily on references and even 20 years after graduating I go back and watch tutorials for stuff I allegedly learned 😂

That's a good strategy, I did that even in art school. I've also employed the trick of doing it on greyscale either with pencils or using a separate layer on digital media. Then you can use that as your self made reference!
