like

Deltarune - probably the game I enjoyed the most but also the game I expected to enjoy the most
Atlantis no Nazo - I want to explore this game forever and never beat it
Castlevania Legends - I hyper fixated on the Clockwork Tower music, and on how annoying the bats are, for a couple weeks

I’m halfway through writing a “Games I played in 2025” post and I didn’t do any ranking. I’ve been trying this year to develop a unique relationship with each game I play and that means they aren’t readily comparable, in the same way that your relationships with your friends aren’t comparable.

oh there was a Pokemon specific point here about the Golbat sprite having personality (seriously it’s an insane sprite) and then that’s a springboard for the imagination to run wild. The 3D model meanwhile is a simulation of little to no personality.

world is gone.

I also want to say that by fidelity I mean all aspects of presentation. Film grain makes things more dreamlike. Watching a 480p rip of the Sopranos makes things more dreamlike.

I don’t think my conclusion is to toss out better graphics or anything. I don’t know my conclusion, really

absurd tongue, how he would attack, how he would hang from the ceiling. With the model you can just… directly see how he moves in space. The imagination you had, the interaction with the media, gets discarded and replaced with a 3D physics demo. The dreamlike state where art was taking you to a new

1. The sprite is a singular pose stuck in time, the model moves and manipulates itself in real time.

2. The sprite uses pixels and very few colors. The model is still cartoonish but is otherwise attempting to be a real object.

With the sprite you can only imagine how Golbat flies around with that

I looked up the original story and yeah, "there must always be a new keyword" was apparently what they "learned" from the experience D=

There was some MTG set where players complained that there were no new mechanics. And Wizards said what are you talking about, there's tons of new designs in this set. Turns out, because the set had no new KEYWORDS, players thought that meant it had no new mechanics.

I have this sinking feeling that years from now I'll have forgotten everything about this game EXCEPT for the farmer's masturbation technique.

the word “marathon” actually comes from the story of a Greek messenger who ran 26 miles to share his NES passwords with the Athens senate

I really like this point about using your imagination. I’ve thought about this with how high fidelity media is now - the part of my brain that had to fill in the blanks on pixel art doesn’t activate when games are showing me 4K HD models now.

I heard this joke like 17 years ago and I think about it at least once a month.
