On the other hand, global output and use of coal, crude oil and natural gas have continued to climb to fresh records, along with resulting energy use emissions, which in 2024 were nearly 10% more than discharged in 2015.

On the one hand, an explosion in renewable energy deployment and a surge in electric vehicle sales have upended global power and car markets and ushered in an ongoing "electrify everything" push across the planet.

In the decade since the landmark COP21 Paris agreement aimed to limit global warming, both a lot and a little has changed when it comes to the energy sector makeup and the trajectory of emissions.

But the growing reliance on natural gas for domestic power generation also stands to stoke tensions with the fast-growing LNG export sector, which is banking on access to abundant and cheap natural gas to drive further expansion.
August 20, 2025 at 3:52 PM
U.S. power firms are building out the most gas-fired power generation capacity globally, which will cement the country's position as by far the world's largest natural gas consumer and gas-fired power producer.

Gas prices for all major consumers have also increased notably from 2024, but are still holding below previous records scaled around 2022-2023.
August 14, 2025 at 2:32 PM
Demand for U.S. natural gas has also climbed to record highs among commercial and industrial users, which has helped lift total U.S. gas consumption by the largest gas users by 5% from the year before to new all-time highs.

Key US natural gas trends to track as LNG exports hit new highs:

U.S. exports of LNG have scaled new highs so far this year, rising by over 20% from the same months in 2024 to cement the U.S.' position as the world's largest supplier of the super-chilled fuel.
August 14, 2025 at 2:32 PM
However, given the strong anti-renewables stance by the Trump administration and the resulting policy uncertainty for power developers, the fact that capacity still climbed this year will be viewed as a win for clean energy advocates.
August 6, 2025 at 2:53 PM
U.S. President Donald Trump's scrapping of subsidies and tax breaks for renewable energy developers has stalled but not derailed solar power capacity growth across the United States.

However, sellers of both bulky passenger trucks and pricey super-chilled gas may be disappointed over the near term as Vietnam's economy remains overwhelmingly reliant on cheap coal for domestic power and nimble motorcycles for transportation.

The tariff deal between the United States and Vietnam sets the stage for a further climb in trade volumes between the countries and will also impact the energy generation mix that powers the fast-growing Vietnamese economy.

The growth in clean output also helped lift its share of China's generation mix to a record 39% for the January to March quarter, up from a 34% share during the same months last year.

China sets new clean electricity milestones during Q1 2025:

China's power system has notched up several new clean energy generation records during the January to March quarter of 2025, cementing the country's position as the global leader in clean electricity production.
April 22, 2025 at 3:04 PM
China, India, Japan and South Korea - the top global coal importers in 2024 - all reduced first-quarter purchases by more than 10% from the same period in 2024, as sharply higher clean power generation allowed for their utilities to cut coal use.
April 1, 2025 at 1:47 PM
Historically, South Korea has been a top-four importer of both coal and LNG, but over the first quarter of 2025 it has cut the combined imports of both fuels by 20% from 2024, thanks to greater home-grown nuclear output.
March 26, 2025 at 2:36 PM
Nuclear reactors have generated more electricity than South Korea's coal and natural gas-fired plants since September of last year, and have helped the country's utilities make steep cuts to fossil fuel purchases and use so far in 2025.
March 26, 2025 at 2:36 PM
Large economies in Asia - including China, India, Japan and Vietnam - are also developing far more solar, wind and hydropower capacity than gas-fired capacity, as part of an ongoing drive to produce clean home-grown energy.
February 26, 2025 at 2:46 PM
Asia's largest economies have three times more coal-fired power capacity under construction than gas-fired capacity, according to @globalenergymon.bsky.social (GEM), and already rely on coal for roughly 45% of regional power generation.
February 26, 2025 at 2:46 PM
But while overall gas consumption in Asia will certainly expand from current levels, gas peddlers may need to temper their optimism in light of growing coal-fired capacity throughout the region.
February 26, 2025 at 2:46 PM
If Texas power firms can secure over 30% of system power needs from renewable assets, that could provide scope for reduced fossil fuel use elsewhere in the generation mix, and help cap overall emissions from the U.S.' largest power system.
