I read multiple books on the Chalisa as well but Mahaviri was special. Do give it a read and you will come across an explanation like no other

Bad choice of author, Devdutt's translations and deductions are sometimes pretty weird. Try Mahaviri by Nityananda Misra(a Sanskrit scholar) for demystifying the Chalisa.
