Idea for novel: dystopian version of Lysistrata-women have stopped having sex with men but instead of stopping war they increase it & create a Broligarchy where their repressed sexuality is redirected to video game types of violence in reality against innocents. Call it Trump’s Liesistrata…🤔

Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God, is like an indie conquistador movie filmed incredibly on the Amazon in Peru. The shit is real! The film looks like a documentary but lands like a fable w/ profound but sublime statements on colonization, religion and mankind. Great film. Must watch. On Criterion.

De Palma’s Carlito’s Way was a split decision on Siskel & Ebert. Europeans preferred it to Americans but the gap has narrowed. The plot is preposterous pulp. Pacino’s changes accents more than wardrobe-each unidentifiable. Penn is hysterical. Movie looks great, never dull (but not for Rosenbaum.)

Ephron’s You’ve Got Mail is not intrinsically an important film-a lightweight romantic comedy-but it takes a snapshot of America right when capitalism, male/female relationships & the internet are about to take a catastrophic turn, visible trends w/ an ominous trajectory to the present day disaster.

Jeff Tweedy’s Twilight Override was the best album of 2025. It’s embarrassing that it isn’t even on most top ten albums of 2025. Didn’t make Pitchfork’s Top 50 but Addison “my cheeks are red like cherries in spring” Rae did. Right.😶

This time of year I remember the New Yorker piece by Margaret Talbot where Rankin gave an explanation of why the rag doll was on the Island of Misfit Toys: psychiatric problems 😬

Best news of the year? The entire run of The New Yorker is digitized and online, very user-friendly and ready for hours/days/months/years of perusal. 🤓

Ebert & Brody criticized Miller’s Maggie’s Plan for not bringing the screwball/funny enough-not bringing it to a boil. Brody criticizes it as “whimsy in a void,” which is exactly how I would describe it but as a positive assessment of the film. It’s extra dry and fizzy like champagne. Funny film.

Every year the iconic New Yorker Xmas cover(s) put me in a holiday mood… 🎅 🌲

After finishing Tulathimutte’s numbingly funny (funningly numbing?) book, Rejection, I thought Jacqueline Susan’s quote after reading Portnoy’s Complaint was exactly how I felt: “Philip Roth is a good writer, but I wouldn’t want to shake hands with him.”
