For some reason the 4 North American majors (NBA, NHL, MLB & NFL) have been stuck around 30 teams despite all starting with a handful of teams and experiencing growth through franchise expansion.
The NBA is the best-situated product of the 4 to make the leap to 40 teams and they should plan for it.

I understand you want it to be about the purity of basketball, especially internationally but the intl leagues are mostly competitors to the NBA product and it's a business that needs to outgrow its competitors not sustain them. It is important to remember there once was just a handful of NBA teams.

It obviously is a massively successful and incredibly watchable 30 team league with a unique mix of market-sizes that works so why not make it 40. And more teams means more great players get off the bench — the product demand greatly outstrips the global supply of players rn

The NBA really needs a plan to be the first 40 team league — which means moving some teams to the EAST that make geographic/travel sense and expanding more broadly in the WEST (w/ Seattle and Vegas as shoe-ins).
