I've spent way more time than that in China over the years; saw pandas, walked the Great Wall, met a lot of young folk happy to put up with this old English bloke desperately trying to show off my three Chinese phrases :-)

I agree—my only caveat is that the gut is sometimes shaped by social & personal prejudice/bias, so ask it some hard questions before trusting—but I suspect your dad added that warning too.

Great photo and a great library—and think about it—of all the professions librarians are the only ones who give people coming for help what they ask for or are attempting to find.
