It's a fascinating read. Unfortunately Chris Hall left the NIH in April citing political interference. I wasn't aware that good was political.....

The Soviet lost 100 men for every GI that died in Europe. Allied landings sped up the end but the outcome was inevitable

The "donations" were large scale money laundering from left leaning French and Italian unions. I did not say it paid for the state. The currency allowed the Soviet to buy chips on the open market. Without the hard currency they couldn't purchase the tech they needed and they didn't have home grown

Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Archipelago" exposed the Gulag system in USSR. The backlash stopped donations. Without hard currency Soviets couldn't compete with US "star wars" and this directly contributed the fall of the USSR. Worth also checking out Adam Curtis TraumaZone

I just completed a world map jigsaw. All of Europe is 6 tiles, Germany is maybe one of those. Russia is 33 (11 wide, 3 tall). Plus Napolean had already proven that walking in a burning Moscow doesn't really do all that much. The defeat was inevitable

"when his business empire declared bankruptcy only a few years after the rosy projections helped get the bonds sold, the fine print in the prospectus made sure investors absorbed most of the losses."

There is an interesting parallel with the UK. When new labor (Blair) CC ame to power in 97, they gave away interest rate control to the Bank of England. Covered brilliantly in the new Adam Curtis documentary "Shifty" about the decline of the UK m.youtube.com/watch?v=9qtI...

Cesar? Broke the roman Republic and put in place the decline that led to the dark ages. Napoleon conquered Europe and lost it on a gamble that gained him nothing if it worked

@dancarlin.bsky.social Hardcore History episode covers this period in excellent detail. I'm not sure the rot had set in before Cesar but I heartily recommend the episode. His motivation was earning money in Gaul in order to pay off an unsuccessful election www.dancarlin.com/hardcore-his...
