I've wondered if 'before the sun' meant 'before the Sun rose', or, in my vernacular 'in the face (heat) of the Sun'.
No one, at first hand, left to ask now.
To fit with the spirit of the book, I think the second.

USAF RC-135U 'Combat Sent' been out from Mildenhall since early this morning, on the way back now. Looks like it's been down to the Black Sea area, etc.
One of only two (declared) in existence..
