Thirty hours door to door, from the hotel in Brighton (UK) to my house in Sydney. A beautiful day here, with Snufkin demanding I immediately take him out for a walk. WFC was fun, great to see lots of people, but there’s no place like home.

I dropped into the Word for World exhibition yesterday morning. Not a vast amount of material, but very interesting to see a number of Le Guin’s hand drawn maps and illustrations. I (pridefully and perhaps wrongly) thought her map drawing style very similar to my own.

Been ages since I’ve had dinner here, quaffing ale with the likes of Peep O’Day Smilliken, Codger Lewis and Partially-Accurate Toby. Good to see it hasn’t changed. Apart from the addition of Campari.

View from an Adelaide hotel. I’m rarely here at this time of year, I expect it to always be very hot and dry 😀

I found some bell charms. Yes, I was tidying my office (a rare event). So I’m giving them away this Monday at the Writers Assemble event. I also found some Charter Mark pins I will give away on Saturday and Sunday. The (free) sessions are almost full, so book in www.eventbrite.com/cc/writers-a...

Mister Fitz strongly recommends that if you’ll be in Adelaide this weekend (and Monday) you should come to Writers Assemble! The new free literary festival. I’ll be there, with a few things to give away as well. Book here:

Woke up this morning, discovered I’d gone full wizard. Shouldn’t have talked about “genre wizards” attending Writers Assemble! Couldn’t unlock phone, facial recognition fail and talons (not pictured) very awkward.

Snufkin and I encountered a scrub turkey yesterday on Bronte Rd, very exciting for the dog and a surprise to me. Never seen one this far south or in the city.

It isn’t necessary to visit real places to draw on them for fiction (imagination is a powerful tool), but it can be inspirational and handy! This is the farmhouse and brook near Bath I used for Susan’s house in THE LEFT-HANDED BOOKSELLERS OF LONDON. We stayed here for a week after Christmas in 2018.

I just bought my fourth copy of THE GLASS HARMONICA by Barbara Ninde Byfield, to give as a present. I didn’t have a copy when I wrote SABRIEL (I couldn’t find one until 1996, I first read about in an essay by Andre Norton in the 70s) it would have been handy for the entry on bells!

What fell beast approaches in the gloom of night?
Nay, it is no beast but Snufkin, with his collar light so bright
But the shadow he comes to, what fearful thing looms here?
Why it is only a writer
Nothing at all to—
