This restoration not only provided viable habitat for aquatic organisms, it also provided accessibility to monitor fishes long term in the Lower Mississippi River. This monitoring mainly focuses on Alligator Gar and how they take advantage of this dynamic habitat.

GarLab analyzes how these fishes can be indicators of restoration success. At a 6,000-acre floodplain property (Loch Leven), water control mechanisms were successfully implemented over the course of a six year project.

Beyond Minnesota, #GarLab contributes to research much further down the Mississippi River! In partnership with The Nature Conservancy in Mississippi, we study gar ecology and life history in floodplain habitats. #GarWeek

We’ve also been collaborating with MAISRC at UM to help reduce invasive carp populations in Minnesota lakes. This project aims to restore lakes at multiple levels, as removing carp helps aquatic vegetation thrive, in turn providing food and habitat for native fishes.

The State of MN has deemed shortnose gar, longnose gar, and bowfin to be top priorities for conservation across our waterways. To support this effort, #GarLab collects data on these species to estimate populations and build growth models that help determine habitat usage for different life stages.

Happy day 5 of #GarWeek, conservation and research day! Here in Minnesota, the #GarLab is proud to contribute to valuable conservation efforts to protect native non-game fishes.

Take a minute and enjoy some ASM-GAR. #GarWeek

We use dissections to collect information on life history and ecology and infer the specimens' sex, age, diet, and more!

And learn about the long-living Buffalo!

Studying fish like these can give us and other scientists insight into evolutionary biology, and allows us to advance our understanding of how our current ecosystems could’ve looked like millions of years ago. #GarWeek

Meet #GarLab member Raine Flynn!
Raine is a third year student and she has been working in GarLab since it moved to MN in 2023. Her roles include husbandry of the gars, sturgeon, and bowfin housed in the lab, but she also helps with specimen processing, fieldwork, and science communication.
