This may be something that I write an essay about - Musk is talking about post-scarcity, post-carceral futures, his peer Alexander Karp is talking about a future in which nobody works. If you only knew this about them you'd think they were utopian socialists, but they're as far from that as possible

He just stole this idea from Iain M. Banks' Culture books without acknowledging what Banks tells us time and time again is the reason that the Culture is able to function as a post-scarcity society: Communism.
