The paperback edition of my book OPUS goes on sale TODAY

With a new afterword bringing the story up to date, including details of Opus Dei’s links to Project 2025, the human trafficking case against it—and the challenge Pope Leo faces in holding this abusive cult to account

There have been various signs of rapprochement between the Vatican and Opus Dei - the latest being the Cipriani meeting

Meanwhile, Leo refuses to meet victims of Opus Dei, who wrote to him asking for an audience in June. They never got a reply.

He's made his priorities clear

Why would Pope Leo meet with this guy?

Cipriani has long been a controversial figure: he hung out with military officers accused of human rights violations and was taped giving a speech to army cadets filled with obscenities

But, within hours of Francis' death in April, Cipriani unilaterally decided he would no longer comply

He was photographed standing over Francis' corpse defiantly in breach of the restrictions the dead pope had placed on him

The image provoked outrage

Why is Pope Leo meeting with an alleged sex offender?

The pontiff met with a disgraced Opus Dei cardinal this past week - but has completely ignored pleas from victims of this abusive group for him to meet with them

What's going on?

The pope’s current headache could get worse

Sources close to the case tell me they now have Ocáriz, the leader of Opus Dei, in their targets – and hope to have him also summoned for questioning
July 4, 2025 at 12:30 PM
The news creates a huge headache for Pope Leo, who met with Fazio and the Opus Dei leader Ocáriz just a few weeks ago to discuss possible reforms

This latest twist means the pope is now effectively discussing a clean-up of Opus Dei with one of the men who is implicated in the alleged abuse

"I walked around the streets thinking I didn't want to live anymore," she testified

Opus Dei sent her to a doctor who dealt with such cases for the group

She was given antidepressants and sleeping tablets and told to "think of the father" — referring to the Opus Dei founder Josemaría Escrivá

The decision to formally add Fazio to the case comes after one Bolivian woman, who said she was pressured into joining as a teenager and who was part of Opus Dei for 31 years, testified that he had ultimate responsibility in Argentina between 2010 and 2014

Prosecutors accuse Opus Dei of overseeing a “deceptive” system that specifically targeted girls poor backgrounds

Girls as young as twelve were recruited with "false promises" of a better education and work opportunities

Prosecutors are seeking to question Mariano Fazio, the Opus Dei auxiliary vicar and likely heir to its current leader Fernando Ocáriz

Fazio is the most senior Opus Dei figure to be drawn into the case, which was brought by federal prosecutors in September

Mariano Fazio, pictured here on the right meeting Pope Leo last month, is the heir apparent to the group’s current leader Fernando Ocáriz

Prosecutors request that he now be summoned for formal questioning about his role in this explosive case

His comments about the abuse crisis came in a letter celebrating a new play about the excellent @larryportera.bsky.social

Together with her colleagues Pedro Salinas, Daniel Yovera y Patricia Lachira, Paola worked tirelessly to expose the abuses of the Sodality of Christian Life

Pope Leo proclaims “urgent” need to root out “abuse of power, authority, conscience and spirituality” in his first statement on Church abuses

Is he paving the way to shut down Opus Dei, which is accused of all of these?

The ultimatum was made in a letter sent directly by the pope to the head of Opus Dei

As well as the reforms, Leo has also demanded an investigation into abuse allegations

These include human trafficking, enslavement – as well as physical and psychological abuse of members

Interesting how Trump writes that Leo "probably hates America, and obviously has his own separate ambitions"

Would be interesting to hear what Trump thinks those "separate ambitions" might be

Maybe someone could even ask Leo - although he usually only speaks to friendly media

Pulling back the curtain on Opus Dei

As I began looking into the group, it really didn't take long for its carefully crafted public façade - that it was a completely transparent organisation with nothing to hide - to crumble away

I've had hundreds of messages like this over the past few days accusing me of being "BASED"

Either this is co-ordinated trolling by one person who can't spell (I thought Opus Dei schools were good)

Or I'm the new hero of Gen Z

Curious detail in the official announcement of the meeting from the Vatican

Opus Dei boss referred to as "moderator" rather than "prelate" - using the same, much diminished term preferred by Francis

Signals Leo is equally serious about reform

Escrivá was a man who:

- supported Franco
- said it was "impossible" the Nazis killed six million Jews
- used listening devices to spy on his followers
- decided women (but not men) had to sleep on wooden boards because their flesh is weaker

The mass took place back in 2019 in the Peruvian city of Chiclayo, where Robert Prevost was a bishop

The special mass was dedicated to Josemaría Escrivá, the controversial founder of Opus Dei

Photos have emerged of the new pope presiding over a special mass to commemorate the controversial founder of Opus Dei

What should we read into them? Is he a supporter? Is Pope Leo XIV perhaps not as progressive as we thought he was?
