I also have a soft-spot for ASCII-based graphics, so I made a custom engine in Visual Studio capable of making ASCII Games! (still in development)
Just make sure you keep away from the most dangerous bugs:

Programming bugs.

This sounds like a fun concept; live game dev. Sounds challenging too. Maybe when I get a big enough following I can engage in something like that.

Tried adding the chest and, nevermind I don't think it works.

I might just stick with the key by itself.

I definitely think scaling down was the right call.

I'm gonna go with the key and I'm thinking about putting the chest back next to it to emphasize the "loot" aspect.

Chests mean loot, you play as RNG, loot is random. It makes sense in my opinion.

I made some alt images based on various people's feedback. I got a few different people telling me to remove the stats and one person telling me to keep the stats, so I experimented with different things.

I did scale the "Explorer" character down as to make the dice more prominent.

Thoughts?

I like a little bit of both. Have a map that shows the entire land area I can explore and then make the map more detailed as I discover new areas.

Using like checkerboard pixels to achieve a shading effect is genius. Great job!

I intend on updating and improving this game once the jam is over. There are some bugs in its current state and various tweaks to the gameplay I wanna make. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on it.
