Several years ago when I was working after school programs, I remember one of my students crying at the lunch table.
I asked her what was wrong and she told me she missed her dad who is in jail.

I am a union tradesman (apprentice).
When new contract negotiations came through that significantly raised pay for journeymen and apprentices alike, a lot of experienced folks self regulated and were like "Don't slack off. Show our contractors our work is worth the extra pay they're dishing out."

But if you're working 4 days a week for 8 hours each day and your pay affords you a comfortable life - you will be more cooperative when your boss comes up to say, "Hey, I'm concerned we may not meet our deadline. Let's pick up the slack a little bit."

They will likely find increased productivity as people have more energy from a 3-day weekend and make better use of time to still meet goals.

Management won't crack the whip per se but they will be scrutinizing everything to ensure productivity does not drop compared to the current norm of 8-hour days, 5 days a week.
