Yesterday, I attended a fascinating talk by my thesis supervisor, @martapina.bsky.social, about the incredible Kenyan Miocene site of Nakali, which features a unique fossil primate paleodiversity 🦍🤩

Wolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) from the Paleontological Collection of the University of Tübingen (Germany). A great specimen to observe how the tusks are attached to the skull 😱🦣

One of my favorite drawings I created for this year's #Inktober.

The theme was "Mutation", and I wanted to depict the different genera of hominins in Africa 2 Ma ago, Paranthropus and Homo.

And finally we have an inderteminate human species, Homo sp., preparing stone tools to dismember a dead Equus, being seen at some distance by the canid Canis primaevus. Also, the mastodon Anancus osiris is passing by.

Ain Boucherit is interesting due to the diversity of equids, the relatives of horses, zebras and donkeys. On the left we have the extant genus Equus with E. tabeti, but on the right we have the primitive three-toed equid Hipparion libycum.

Also, we have a couple of the gazelles Parantidorcas latifrons in first view.

Here is Connochaetes tournoueri, a primitive wildebeest with pretty long horns. Far in the distance there's the ostrich Struthio barbarus.

My reconstruction of the Algerian site of Ain Boucherit (2.1 Ma), a commission of Museé National du Bardo of Alger.

This is possibly the oldest site with human presence in all Northern Africa.

#Qunkasaura pintiquiniestra 🦕

Did you know that its name has several cultural references?

-Qunka is the Arabic name of Cuenca.
-Saura is "female lizard" in Latin and is a homage to Antonio Saura, a famous artist from Cuenca.
-Pintiquiniestra is the Queen giant of Don Quijote.
