Totally agree about streetcars, though the National City Lines conspiracy was only responsible for about half of the die-off I think. I imagine that in Denmark the answer is just that it costs money, govt spends money = communist, so bye bye train... i don't know if Denmark had a significant Red Scare/subsequent wave of nationalism ever though

Around the height of the Red Scare in the US, Public Transportation was looked upon as being suspiciously communist compared to the supposed liberation of the interstate highway. The memory of that, coupled with conservative's allergy to anything that serves the public, is the main reason over here.
