Not melanism - This dog is e/e recessive red (like a yellow lab), which normally prevents a dog from expressing any black pigment in their hairs at all. What he has is a number of somatic mutations that are turning off the recessive red, allowing the black to express in random locations.

I thought so!! They looked like carpenters to me. The winged ones are alates (queens being raised up before they go breed and start their own colonies). The proximity of the tree to the roof more than likely gave them the opportunity to find the Very Good Nesting Grounds.
