In a recent piece on the books authors love to give, Robert Macfarlane said: ‘Nan Shepherd’s The Living Mountain is…a slender masterpiece’. We share his love for Shepherd’s work. Might we suggest as a companion, ‘In the Cairngorms’ from 1934, reissued by Galileo with a foreword by Mr Macfarlane.

Out today! A re-telling based on legend, Louis de Bernières has called the book ‘atmospheric, strange and addictive’. One for those who like dark influences and alchemy in their historical fiction! ✨
Take a twisty trip into 1840s Cambridge, where alchemy holds sway and a young undergraduate faces a Faustian bargain... dark academia meets feminist themes around selfhood and unchecked ambition.
A feminist Faust for the modern reader from @galileobooks.bsky.social!

It’s publication day for #Firestarter: the fascinating story of John Stallon, the Shelford arsonist who gained notoriety for starting fires on multiple farms in the Cambridgeshire village in the 19th century - and how the village dealt with him.

Folk hero . . . or compulsive sociopath?

It's the #BoatRace this weekend! Who will you be cheering on?
On the #puzzle front, we think these lovely #Cambridge & #Oxford designs by Kathy Lewis are equally good. Depicting many of the cities’ historic buildings, the streets are also sprinkled with little cultural references to spot!
