It was NOT great.

both the "neck!" and the "don't try to know me" are regular sayings in our household. truly a vocabulary we needed to describe cat ownership.

As always, I have to note that this is not a cash handout but a tax break. It's designed to exclude poor people and marginalized communities like the Romani.

One particularly creative example was the privatization of profitable (partially) state-owned companies. They created university endowments from the state-owned shares in MOL, Richter and other Hungarian multinationals. And put hardline Orbanists in charge of those endowments.

In 2022, when the regime expected a tough electoral fight, they made sure that a new government will not have access to any resources, any state assets, or any of the important offices of the state. So they went 100% on privatization and created lengthy tenures for the most important officials.

This oligarchy completed the total state capture in the last decades, from technology to infrastructure works, from art to universities. Everything is privatized, and everything is owned by the parallel state personally controlled by Orbán.

Creating a "national oligarchy" was an explicit goal of the Hungarian regime in the early 2010s. Famously, the Fidesz insider Lánczi András said "what they call corruption is the single most important Fidesz policy" 444.hu/2015/12/21/l...

Another point: Fidesz in Hungary is truly a state-party. There is no distinguishing between party communication/campaigning and state communication. The party, the government and the state bureaucracy are unified in every way - in a way that reminds me of the communist regime.

For example Kari Lake just decided to close down the Hungarian version of Radio Free Europe, which was run by actual professional journalists and did some damaging investigative reporting. x.com/ConradsonJor...
