For me, must reads from school (middle school to college) are Across Five Aprils, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Color Purple. I read Emma in 11th grade which introduced me to Jane Austen, but that's probably another conversation. Also must read Romeo and Juliet, and anything by S.E. Hinton. Plus:
