A town originating from the remains of military bases at WWII’s end, for the startup of transatlantic travel, ‘Gander: The Airport That Became A Town’ telling this story, has just been released & is available at bookstore locations in NL, plus Chapters, & Amazon in soft cover or digital form
From a US magazine Coke AD in the 40's, showing US servicemen visiting a fishing village near their Nfld base, sharing a refreshment. There were 5 US air bases in NL during the 40, 50, & 60's. Goose Bay, Stephenville, Gander, Argentia & St. John's.

Mar.17, 1965 disaster struck Gander based EPA when their Dart Herald, EPA 102, went down over Nova Scotia as a result of inflight structural failure. 8 people on board. There were no survivors. This was EPA's only crash with loss of life. aviation-safety.net/database/rec...

Seaboard Western DC4 at Gander c.1954. The company was the worlds 1st airline dedicated to cargo transportation. Founded on Sept 11, 1946, by Arthur & Ray Norden, both USAAF Transport Command pilots . The airline had an operations office at Gander up until the mid 1960's

Oct 24, 1945, American Overseas Airlines (AOA) DC4 at Gander was the first commercial transatlantic flight. Then Jan 5, 1946, the International Air Conference held in Bermuda, declared Gander Airport was to become an International Airport. This is when it all started.

Muhammad Ali poses with RCMP officers & their dog during his stopover at Gander in 1978. The famous boxer being very friendly with the terminal staff, visited the RCMP detachment at the airport who asked for a photo as a memento of his visit

This famous image was taken at Gander in WWII. The Canadian Army provided ground security & the RCAF provided air security, from enemy invasion. This protection also provided extra training for soldiers & airmen before being shipped out to fight overseas.

Sterling Airlines Caravelle & Saturn Airways DC8 at Gander early 1970s. Both companies used Gander to service their overseas charter operations.

The coffee counter in the terminal lounge at Gander during the 1950's. Flight crews would frequently get a refreshment here as they await their aircraft being serviced. A 1958 statistic showed that 9723 aircraft landed Gander airport carrying a total of 407,197 passengers

TWA B707 at Gander c.1973. TWA was one of the first companies to use Gander airport in 1946 on a scheduled basis. TWA had an ops office at the airport with a full compliment of dispatchers & AMEs stationed in Gander to service their North Atlantic fleet.

Because of its history in aviation pioneering, Gander airport was given the honour to have its name assigned to a 39 Km crater on Mars by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) . View of crater on Mars by NASA

The Bug, owned by the airport in 1938, transferred to the RCAF in 1941. Without a road system, Gander's answer to a poorly scheduled train service to outlying towns, was a bus designed to operate via railway tracks, during the airports early days. ganderairporthistoricalsociety.org/_html_war/RC...

Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin (in uniform), the first human to travel into space to orbit the earth, makes the only time he entered North America at Gander 1963. His flight landed for servicing while on his way to Cuba.
