After being attacked, the war became existential for the Soviet people—but the outcome was also territorial expansion and domination of Eastern Europe, not liberation.
The Soviet people were brave. The Soviet regime was brutal. Both can be true. I think is what you’re saying but to be factual.

The Soviets didn’t enter WWII for moral reasons. They entered because Hitler invaded them. Until 1941, Stalin was partnering with Nazi Germany, dividing Poland and supplying raw materials.

The Red Army did defeat Nazi Germany, but let’s not mythologize it. Soviet forces committed mass rape, looting, and atrocities across Eastern Europe. The USSR ran its own system of gulags and killed or worked to death over a million of its own citizens during the war years.
