Pan finds even calls for redistribution suspect when they focus on closing the racial wealth gap rather than closing all wealth gaps. “On paper, the median white household in the US owns about $189,000 in assets, whereas the median black household owns only $24,000,” she writes, and “the average white household wealth is around $840,000 greater than average black household wealth.” Still, Pan claims, there is an outsized focus on these disparities; in fact, liberals’ “fixation” on the racial wealth gap is indicative of their desire to maintain the current economic order. “[C]losing most of the existing wealth gap between blacks and whites—without first closing the massive wealth gap between the rich and the poor—would largely necessitate making already-rich black people richer, while conversely, very little of the racial wealth gap would only be closed by helping poor black people acquire more wealth.” That is only true if one doesn’t know the difference between medians and averages.

afternoon, eight Columbia and Barnard students asked a federal judge to stop the university from giving the government access to pro-Palestine protesters' disciplinary records, alleging that doing so would expose students to "public threats, hate speech, and physical danger" in retaliation for their advocacy. It's not just a hypothetical. Khalil, who is currently detained at an ICE facility in
Louisiana, was among the students who filed the suit. On Friday, his legal team announced that they were filing an emergency bail motion in the Southern District of New York. Khalil, who is Palestinian, faces deportation to Syria depending on the outcome of his immigration case. Court filings note that aside from his permanent US residency - also known colloquially as a green card - he is effectively stateless: he grew up in a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria, from which his family was later displaced by the civil war there. His relatives are now scattered throughout Europe and West Asia, his attorneys said. (While permanent residents are subject to deportation under certain circumstances — usually after being charged with a crime — Khalil's case is especially unusual in that it relies on an obscure McCarthy-era statute that has rarely been used to deport anyone.)

yes, correct. though i’d add that as egregious as this sounds, it’s not unusual in an immigration context. the court (and judge) you have matter a lot, and ICE is known to move people around from another story:

It’s not uncommon for ICE to transfer the people it has arrested to far-away detention centers. Setareh Ghandehari, the advocacy director of the Detention Watch Network, said ICE often uses transfers to “target and retaliate against activists speaking up against the immigration and ICE detention system.” The remoteness of these facilities often means that detainees are far from not only their friends and family but also from attorneys and oversight groups. According to the latest Census data, less than 5,000 people live in Jena. Meanwhile, the GEO Group’s detention center there can hold up to 1,160 people.

“The arrest of Khalil and his subsequent detention and transfer is a continuation of that practice,” Ghandehari told The Verge. “ICE is especially prone to transferring people to more rural locations, like Jena, Louisiana, that are not only far away from a person’s support system, but are also hard to access

During a hearing in a New York federal court on Wednesday, Judge Jesse Furman ruled that Khalil can have two privileged calls with his attorneys. This, however, was not an immigration hearing: it was related to the habeas corpus petition Khalil's attorney, Amy Greer, filed after his arrest, requesting his release from ICE detention. Greer submitted the filing around 4AM on Sunday, just hours after his arrest — but DOJ attorneys claim that by that point, Khalil was at an ICE facility in New Jersey, which means Furman wouldn't have jurisdiction.
Khalil is now at an ICE detention center in Jena, Louisiana, and the government's attorneys said he has been issued a notice to appear in immigration court there - an early step in the deportation process.
The habeas petition will play an important part in the future of his case, affecting his ability to stay in the US. The DOJ wants Khalil's attorney to file an amended habeas petition in either New Jersey or Louisiana, which would put it before a different judge. And if that request isn't granted and Khalil isn't released, his immigration proceedings will likely take place in Jena, where immigration judges are known for their abysmally low asylum grant rates.
Jurisdiction is paramount in a case like this, especially given that the legal rationale behind Khalil's potential deportation is extremely unusual.

no, they are different agencies within the department of homeland security with entirely separate mandates. from the article linked in the post you’re replying to:

To become a permanent resident, Khalil had to register with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the DHS agency that handles legal migration. Under the Privacy Act, USCIS and other agencies must generally safeguard people’s “personally identifiable information” — including their name, address, and biometric identifiers. But there are some exceptions to this. USCIS is allowed to share information with other DHS agencies “as long as there is a mission need in line with the requestor’s official duties.” A DHS policy memo issued in 2007 states that the department “gives the highest priority to the sharing of potential terrorism, homeland security, law enforcement, and related information” and that DHS personnel “must have timely access to all relevant information they need to successfully perform their duties.”

(USCIS links to this memo, hosted by Homeland Security Digital Library, in its policy manual chapter on “privacy and confidentiality.” That link, however, is now dead and leads to the following message: “Content on this platform is being reviewed and removed to align with the President’s executive orders and DoD/DHS priorities. Until that review is complete, site content is not available.” The memo can still be accessed via the Wayback Machine. It is unclear whether DHS has updated its policies.)

$While the online right debates the morality of St. Clair’s (alleged!!!!) child and the left dunks on her for thinking the leopards won’t eat her face, basically every branch of the federal government is doing its part to defund Planned Parenthood, a longstanding conservative goal. For groups like the Heritage Foundation—whose most recent mandate for leadership, the much-derided Project 2025, called for a repeal of policies that subsidize “single-motherhood”—this is an ideological project. For others, Musk included, it’s about stripping the government for parts. In any case, the outcome is the same. An (alleged!!!!!) out-of-wedlock pregnancy isn’t enough to fracture the tech-trad coalition. Not when there’s real work to be done, real gains to be had.$
