With these results we showcase how RNA has a major impact in phenotypic evolution due to Alternative Splicing and RNA modifications!
Exciting times coming ahead! 🤓🖥️👩‍🔬🐭🐶🐮🐁🐥

At the epitranscriptome level (shoutout to Akanksha from @edueyras.bsky.social Lab for her hard work) we found that 14.2% of m6A RNA modifications are conserved across mammals, with 39% of analyzed genes containing a conserved m6A RNA modification.

Our research is the first to assess the conservation, across mammalian species 👩‍🔬🐭🐁🐶🐮, of coordinated splicing events, primarily driven by tissue-specific mutually associated exon splicing. With an enrichment in neural tissues 🧠 and cytoskeletal genes.

We found that 20% of orthologues genes 🧬 between our species have multiple mammalian-conserved alternative transcripts. And 31% of these genes have tissue-specific switching of the major transcript isoforms.

We built a direct RNA-seq atlas of six tissues across 5 mammalian species (👩‍🔬 🐭🐁🐶🐮) and an out-group species (🐥) and we assess the expression of full-length isoforms and their m6A modifications.

In this project the Weatheritt Lab
joined forces with the @edueyras.bsky.social Lab and the Shirokikh Lab to use the power of long-read sequencing technology of @nanoporetech.com to describe the importance of transcriptome diversity in mammalian evolution.
