My original point was that “scientist” is much more restrictive in English. In German it’s any organized body of knowledge, like law or recycling.

Sure—Sociology is not part of the humanities but can be considered one of the Geisteswissenschaften (by Dilthey, for example)

Helmholtz, Darwin, Maxwell, and Pasteur were all greater scientists than Emil du Bois-Reymond.

I regard him as a greater intellectual, given his contributions to history and philosophy.

Maybe when Jordi Cat finishes his biography of Maxwell I'll change my mind.
