Imagine a rhino horn longer than most people are tall… Woolly rhinos had them! Record-breaking 1.65 m nasal horn found in Siberia belonged to a 40+ year-old female 🦏❄️

In Australia for a few weeks as guest researcher, wrapping up analysis on materials from #Oman and teaching a crash course in #Zooarchaeology at @latrobeuni.bsky.social. Today I had the pleasure of giving a talk on Paleolithic human–carnivore interactions, really enjoyed it!

A week ago, I was honored to receive the 2025 Emilie Campmas Prize from #AssEmCa for my research on the exploitation of lions and bears by humans in the Paleolithic 🥹
The association welcomed me like family, and I met great people, topped off by a visit to Pair-non-Pair cave!

I was lucky enough to be in Tarragona at @iphes-cerca.bsky.social to attend the presentation of #Pink to the public, and see the fossil remains firsthand. I'm just mind blowed right now

Next (and last) study of my PhD, on the way! 🤩
Crazy how much is tucked away in museum storage. We've been excavating for so long now, but only a fraction ever gets published. Let’s see what these old bones and teeth have to say! 🏺🧪

These beautiful artifacts, dated to around 40 ka, are housed at the @landesmuseumhalle.bsky.social, where many are on display. If you want to learn more about Ilsenhöhle at Ranis, I highly recommend checking out the latest publications by @marcel-weiss.bsky.social

I'm a zooarchaeologist (and I love it), but I also appreciate the beauty of knapped stone tools! So, for #FlintFriday, here's a "perfect example" of a blattspitze point from Ranis, where recent research revealed an early Homo sapiens dispersal into Europe's higher latitudes already by 45 ka! 🏺🧪

The Landesmuseum in #Halle is one of my favorite museums. From the aurochs with its head low, ready to charge, to many treasures like the Homo erectus remains from #Bilzingsleben, birch tar from #Königsaue and later artifacts like the iconic Nebra Sky Disk, it’s a must-see

The excavation is almost finished, and it’s been such a pleasure to take part in archaeological field research in the #Philippines. I’ve learned so much and look forward to contributing some cool zooarchaeological data! 🐢🐠🦌

It’s #FossilFryday! Check out this partial Chelonia mydas (green sea turtle) carapace, freshly excavated from a Holocene site in the Philippines 🦴 🌊 Cut marks on the shell & bones suggest it was part of an ancient feast! 🍴 Fun fact: Their name comes from their green fat, not their shells! 🐢

Last week, I visited the National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta, which reopened in October after a devastating fire. On display now are the original Homo erectus fossils from Java, including Sangiran 17, the most complete 💀 from this region, ca. 1 Ma old. Stunning!

Another #UNESCO site I visited during my vacation in Indonesia is the Sangiran basin, where the first asian Homo erectus 💀, over 700 ka, were discovered. More than 50% of Asia’s archaic hominin fossils come from this site, along with artifacts and extinct animal remains. #Archaeology #anthropology

Spending the holidays in #Indonesia, home to incredible #UNESCO sites like Borobudur Temple, the world’s largest Buddhist temple (9th century). A masterpiece of Javanese architecture, it symbolizes the path to enlightenment with over 2,500 intricate relief panels. Stunning history and beauty! 🏺🧪

Yesterday at the Meeting of PhD Students in #Evolution and #Ecology 2024 in Tübingen, I was honored to receive the Best Oral Presentation award! I presented early findings from my first PhD paper on hominin subsistence and ecology in Lebanon. Feeling grateful for this recognition! 🏆😊
