5/ So, what does this mean?
Natural variation in commercial strains is real—and comparable to gene editing.
👉 This supports classifying base-edited inoculants as non-GMOs under current regulations ⚖🧫

4/ lab & greenhouse tests showed these natural mutations affect:
🔹 oxidative stress resistance
🔹 root attachment
🔹 survival
🔹 nitrogen fixation 🌾

3/ 🧪 91% of these mutations hit coding regions, and 82% are non-synonymous—meaning they could impact protein function and bacterial performance.

2/ We sequenced commercial variants of Bradyrhizobium japonicum E109, a key soybean inoculant 🌱.
Surprise: they had an average of 9.7 spontaneous mutations—similar to what you'd get with CRISPR base editing at 6+ sites!

🧵1/ Ever wondered if bacteria can edit themselves? 🧬🔧
In our latest #IGMB study, we looked at soybean inoculant strains and found natural DNA changes that mimic gene editing!
