Exactly my point. Clean up is easier, but he MIGHT feel the frustration when putting sets back together, and eventually come back to see the value in putting them away differently. He might just not be there currently.

This is why libraries put a cart out for books that need reshevled. The user appreciate that staff will maintain the system, but not enough to properly reshelve on their own.

Sounds like he likes that YOU organize them, but not enough to help maintain the system. So the system must loose integrity to meet the user where they are.

Very difficult to force an organizational system on a user that does not find the value to outweigh the effort.

Lego picnic. Lego only happens on the Lego picnic blanket. When it’s time to clean up, just grab the corners and dump into a Rubbermaid box, blanket fits on top so it comes out of box first before Legos can at next session.
