Fantasy & Apocalyptic films reviewed
@gabecrate.bsky.social
Writer, director, filmmakers, and punk rock musician casually attempting to #review every # fantasy #swordsandsorcery #postapocalyptic and #PA adjacent film ever made. yes. even that one. #moviereviews
☢️#97. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, 1981. Like children imitating a magic trick, this masterwork of simplicity inspired an entire sub-genre of inferior work - never to be outdone. That is until the magician retook the stage again in 2015. #classic 5/5 ☢️
December 19, 2025 at 9:15 PM
☢️#96. Hostile, 2017. The #127hours of survival horror. Duel narratives move from a trapped #postapocalyptic survivor to an exhausting present day relationship drama. Beautifully shot and smartly helmed by first time feature auteur Mathieu Turi. #missingpenis #Hostile 3/5 ☢️
December 18, 2025 at 4:26 PM
☢️#95. Doomsday, 2008. A #postapocalyptic Frankenstein’s monster of stitched together influences is only ruined by plot and dialog. Amazing schlocky fun, though slightly disappointing considering that it’s coming from the director of horror breakthrough #TheDescent. 3.5/5 ☢️
December 17, 2025 at 4:33 PM
☢️#94. Parasite, 1982. Equal parts #Cronenberg-esque body horror and B movie #postapocalyptic creature feature, this one hits all the respective tropes creating a strangely unique (and dull) concoction. Fun puppets, prosthetics, and overly highlighted “3D” gags abound. 2.5/5 ☢️
December 16, 2025 at 4:00 PM
☢️#93. No Blades of Grass, 1970. Worldwide ecological collapse sends an instantly murderous family to seek shelter in the British countryside. Clumsy and antiquated, tight editing keeps it watchable. Despite the title and poster’s claim, many blades of grass are featured. 3/5 ☢️
December 15, 2025 at 4:42 PM
☢️#92. Zombieland, 2009. While the meta humor may wear thin for some, this mashup success paved the way for eventual #Deadpool screenwriters #Reese and #Wernick to further push their genre deconstructing approach to comedy. Lots of gags, gore, and silly fun. #Zombieland 3.5/5 ☢️
December 14, 2025 at 7:52 PM
☢️#91. 1984, 1984. The quintessential dystopian film. Deeply unsettling, bleak, and filled with truth both ugly and beautiful. Fantastically stark photography by #RogerDeakins and a gut wrenching performance by the late #JohnHurt. Two plus two equals #classic. 4/5 ☢️
December 13, 2025 at 5:06 PM
☢️#90. Rats: Night of Terror, 1984. Whether you hate or love rats, you may want to skip this dopey #postapocalyptic creature feature. Puppets were used for some stunts/gags, but let’s just say PETA wasn’t on set for the majority of the shoot. #amazingcostumes #sobaditsgood 2/5 ☢️
December 12, 2025 at 4:03 PM
☢️#89. Endgame, 1983. Predating #TheRunningMan, this televised bloodsport satire starts out interestingly, but quickly devolves into a cliche riddled #postapocalyptic escort mission. Still a step up from director #JoeDAmato’s standard #maxploitation output. #sobaditsgood 3/5 ☢️
December 11, 2025 at 4:09 PM
☢️#88. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 2014. Continuing to prove that you can reboot a franchise without crapping on its predecessor - this one tops the new trilogy for me. Of course all I ever really needed was a chimpanzee on horseback firing a machine gun. #newclassic 4/5 ☢️
December 10, 2025 at 4:07 PM
☢️#87. Burst City, 1982. Part live action #Akira, part #Japanesepunk rock concert film. Experimental and anarchistic throughout - even without a cohesive narrative there’s nary a dull moment. If this sounds remotely like the film for you - you are correct! #BurstCity 3.5/5 ☢️

Some good stuff
December 9, 2025 at 12:22 AM
⚔️#15, The Magic Sword, 1962. If your grandparents watched this one as a kid, you probably can skip as you’ve likely already absorbed the generational trauma of this nightmare fuel fantasy film. Floating heads, demons, hags, dragons. Of its time, but effective nonetheless. 3/5 ⚔️
December 8, 2025 at 4:35 PM
☢️#86. Creepozoids, 1987. Mercifully short, this zero budget #Alien knockoff spends the #postapocalypse in a warehouse with dipshit-munching rubber monsters. Horrid acting, writing, and bottom shelf practical effects all add up to a #sobaditsgood-time. #Creepozoids 1.5/5 ☢️
December 7, 2025 at 7:43 PM
☢️#85. X-men: Days of Future Past, 2014. Despite #KittyPryde’s omission from this classic tale, it’s still the perfect finale for the franchise. Though I heard an unfortunate rumor that Sony made further films. And yes, I’m counting this as one as #postapocalyptic. #Xmen 4/5 ☢️
December 6, 2025 at 6:14 PM
☢️#84. Doom Runners, 1997. This #Nickelodeon produced #postapocalyptic family film follows a group of 90s kids escaping dystopian overlord #TimCurry as he chews scenery from his office. A highlight is #FuryRoads own #RictusErectus as the child protecting gentle giant. 2.5/5 ☢️
December 5, 2025 at 5:15 PM
☢️#83. Equilibrium, 2002. Looking and feeling like a feature length perfume ad, this stylized dystopian action flick borrows too much from better films to be a lost classic, but is still entertaining. Worth a watch for the extremely silly #gunkata action. Yes, #gunkata. 3/5 ☢️
December 4, 2025 at 4:09 PM
☢️#82. I Think We’re Alone Now, 2018. Like so many that have come before in this sub genre; #PeterDinklage is the last man on earth...until he isn’t. Understated and humane, the only thing I didn’t love about this gently performed film is the titular pop song reference. 3.5/5 ☢️
December 3, 2025 at 4:17 PM
☢️#81. A Boy and His Dog, 1975. A dark comedy with the emphasis placed squarely on dark. #DonJohnson and a wisecracking telepathic sheepdog search the #postapocalyptic wasteland for “female companionship.” Dreary, mean, bizarre - and a uniquely fun #classic. 4/5 ☢️
December 2, 2025 at 4:20 PM
December 2, 2025 at 12:08 AM
☢️#80. Idiocracy, 2006. Buried upon release to avoid upsetting the studio’s corporate interests, #MikeJudge still thankfully snuck this one past the goalie. As intelligent as it is sophomoric, sadly its wildest predictions continue to feel frighteningly accurate. 4/5 ☢️
December 1, 2025 at 4:06 PM
☢️#79. Neon City, 1991. Stock baddie #MichaelIronside takes a turn as leading man on a #postapocalytic escort mission. Brutally uneventful, I was quickly rooting for him to betray the grating ensemble cast. Unfortunately, he was trustworthy to the boring end. #NeonCity 2/5 ☢️
November 30, 2025 at 6:02 PM
☢️#78. Warrior of the Lost World, 1983. A perpetually grumpy #RobertGinty mumbles his way through this nitro paced action farce astride the #jarjarbinks of talking motorcycles. A surprisingly large production with fun stunts and creative camera work. #sobaditsgreat. 2.5/5 ☢️
November 29, 2025 at 5:31 PM
Think it’d be at home amongst the total recall vehicles as well.
November 29, 2025 at 4:29 PM
☢️#77. Logan’s Run, 1976. It’s a psychedelic freak-out in a not so groovy dystopia. Ground breaking (for the time) optical effects, colorful design, and very cool #postapocalyptic matte paintings round out this fast paced sci-fi romp. #Notthebestmodels but still a #classic 4/5 ☢️
